I'm the opposite... lately I enjoy more painting horses than figures... it is easier

Sorry, should only have sent you the horses then and let the figures be casualties. :-D

The new old ones arrived today.

The British Hussar Regiments, the 7th ,15th,18th ,10th with shako, along with the 1st,2nd and 3rd Hussar Regiments KGL can be modeled using these figures.

On the table yesterday

Here they are the 7th Dragoons ( Hussars ) ,supporting some allied cavalry who to put no finer point to it,are heavily engaged with the French Lancers. In the background are British Life Guards. BB

PART ONE

A fresh new start,to conversion, but only on the horses.Any box set shown below will do for the Waterloo period. Once changed it is then up to the individual to decide upon any regiment they wish to paint.

Image

The work on these is not going to be easy each horse needs fixing to its base. The blanket roll needs modelling in front of each saddle,( Green Stuff ) ,and Double reins need constructing & fitting to each horse too.
Really though looking at it logically this is really no conversion at all,but an attempt to bring these horses up to an acceptable standard where they than can be used on a Diorama, and not look out of place.

Image

Here are three, which show where the blanket & reins are to be fitted.
( blu tac & wire illustration only)

Image

As we can see clearily in the picture these massive raised plastic rings must be trimmed off,and hopefully leaving a good end result.

PART TWO
As I had to wait weeks for the Grenstuff to arrive,I delayed the posting on this conversion, and have added Part One as it was already in place, and because it is dealing with theory rather than any work being carried out. However I thought it apt to still include it. This part,Part Two is dealing with work having been carried out.

The horses I Super Glued to the base._______________ Most Irritating!

Image

I then heat sealed them by melting them in place from the bottom with my cheap Soldering Iron.

Image

This might seem overkill, but this does cut down on the risk of horses being separated from their bases during painting and varnishing.__________ That believe me is Most,Most Irritating Indeed.

( Sorry. Dirty nails due to painting other stuff! )

Image

The first few being worked on.

Image

My first ever attempt at this sort of work.

Now there should be a Sheep Skin added over the saddle, but I intend to paint the saddle in off white rather than trying to create something that is not seen in detail, but depending on the look of the finish, I might well try adding one that over laps slightly the blanket and the saddle.

Image

The Greenstuff was directly modelled on the figures to create both Blanket & extra Bags ,while making sure the figures fit snug between the two.
I waited until the next day before applying primer by then it had cured very hard. They look rather crude at present, but after extra work cutting off those horrid rings, then the real painting comes next. Last job will be making the double reins. BB

I recently posted the topic `My Photoshoot idea.`A simple setup that actually works quite well because it attracts the light well and reflects it too. Most importantly it causes no confusion to the eye of the camera when taking the shot, because only the subject matter is on display. I realised only far to well that my eye sight is getting very bad,and rigging up double lenses in a visor has improved what I can see and paint on tiny 20 or 24mm figures. However I needed to check out details I`d painted and found the camera to be the perfect tool to use for this purpose, thats is why I rigged up my very simple Photo shoot Booth. Working on this useless ITALERI pose that was not wanted even on the Project BFFF,of the horse with the broken ankle of its back leg , I used the simple idea of mine of the Booth to actually see how it looks with paint upon it. I have already shown how to correct the broken back ankle pose in an earlier posting here within this open ended topic.

Image

This is not an item showing of my own painting skills, because I have very little talent where that is concerned. The aim of all my conversions was and still is that others can show off their own talent in that direction. So the picture shows the painted horse which requires more detail work ,and then dulling down. It also shows a figure with some primer and base coat applied to it,and this will be a conversion too in the sense it will be one of Staff Corps Cavalry which was astablished in 1812 by Wellington himself. Approved by Horse Guards a small force of 200 came into being. They thus became Wellingtons military Police, and detachments of them served with each British division. It is thought, but not proved that they might have worn a full crested Tarleton helmit when first formed. They were identified by a red scarf tied around the right shoulder, precursor of the `MP` armband.

Image

The tunic front, and collar, cuffs ,and turn backs will be of Navy Blue facings laced with white.
The leather trousers painted a light grey with two blue lines down each leg,and the inside legs will be slightly daker grey. His face will be painted in a redish skin tan colour. Then two colour washes made by adding white to this Tan colour each time will be applied to highlight the face. Being colour blind means I give no painting instructions, but I just wanted to explain my process of painting this time.

Image

This horse one of three recently painted,is a new way I am trying out for the first time.
The horse was painted in a Bright Red with main, tail and lower legs in black. Then a black wash was applied. The reins need touching up with a sandy earth colour again, and the hooves need dry brushing. The whole thing was varnished to protect the work, but another anti shine varnish will be eventually brushed on after the other colours have been applied.

So this has been my description of converting both horse & rider to ones of Staff Corps Cavalry. BB
