How to make a Removable Base for a Figure

We all get to throwing out tons of free stuff each week, which could be used for modelling simple things that could improve the look of many a figure whatever period or fantasy Game it comes from.
This Tip is free as always, and it is another little something of mine passed on in my way of supporting Benno`s Figure Forum ,which allowed me so kindly to open up many a door in the hobby.

Forming your base is simple a child can do it,which was my aim always in the teaching role.
Using spare plastic sheet scribe out with a pen.I use an empty pen to do this job, because it is the heavy impression left I want to see,and not ink which tends not to want to play out upon most plastic sheet.
The free stuff I prefure to use.Well why spend money on something you will not see anyway.
So once your shape is decided upon cut it out,and try slipping it in between the legs and feet of the figure. So it will not fit. So trim a bit off until it does. Make hash of the work ,no harm done, just learn by it and make another until Success it Do`s!

I measured out and cut out two bases. Then P V A Glue was brush on thickly. Left for a few minutes and then the tiny stones were gradually added. Heap tons on and they will look awful,so just a few at a time. You can use Kiln Dried Sand too. I added my own dark mix wash onto the stones after I`d placed the bases back on the plastic sheet. I used the tip of a pin just to stop them moving and Left them to dry overnight. When removed off the off the plastic, each one leaves the clear shape of the next ones to be cut out. So the first ones act as a tenplate for second ones to be cut out,and so on until all are finished.

Looks good and no great need in my case even to paint it.

So removable,Why? Well you can make several different bases for one figure. Say one with dry desert sand look. Another with grass and stuff. Another with thick mudd. Another with snow. So much more ways to use your figures if you wish too. Many Bases for horses could be made too in my way of thinking. Have Fun BB

Great idea Paul.

The wargamers can use this to portray different grounds in a battle, like stream, road, grass, etc.

Thanks guys for your comments,
I have quite a few hundred of these 1/32 scale fellows all nice Toy Figures to me, and also lots of Men At Arms too that I wanted to place on Castle Battlements. Rocks and stones and grass wood look oddly out of place on stone floors say. I have seen figures in photos, standing inside buildings with grass around their feet , and this little bit of effort can avoid stuff looking out of place for photo shoots of which I am mostly interested in. Always my aim is to make good stuff out of things we throw away. It can be argued ,you can buy clear plastic see through bases, but why when you can make them for free. BB

Excellent idea. I have often thought about this problem of base scenery not matching the surroundings. Your idea solves it elegantly. Now give that poor archer a bow-string!
