1/72 Strelets - German Army in Stalingrad (IMG&Link Review)

Posted by Panzer_Grenadire on 19 Dec 2014, 19:03

After a long activity and with an impressive catalogue of 1/72 figs, in 2013 Strelets had finally decided to tackle for the first time the WWWII Germans topic. Having the reputation of manufacturing quite chunky toy-soldiers, with “German Army in Stalingrad” it seems the firm wanted to prove they have the necessary means in order to deliver better miniatures. Combining both positive and negative attributes, the set certainly puts forward notable ideas as well as the largest diversity in terms of WWII German winter attire available in mass-production sets. Due to its specific features, it might get the interest of diorama builders as well and the review of this set, together with lots of images, is available at the link below:

I hope you will enjoy it.

Cristian--

I am not a fan of Strelets-R figures, but I recall having been surprised and pleased at photos for the masters of this set, as you mention in your review. Although the finished product were a bit of a let down, I thought still there were some possibilities to make it useful. Your review has certainly added interest to the set. I was especially interested in your comprehensive discussion of officially issued and improvised cold weather garments utilized by these men in that terrible conflict. Of course these poor fellows were eventually cut off and completely surrounded, so supply became an increasingly desperate problem.

After seeing your outstanding painting and conversions of these figures, I may just have to purchase a few sets of my own. Have you swapped the heads on the converted officer and MP38 gunner?

Thank you very much for your message and I am very happy you like these figs as well as the review.
Likewise, I wish to thank you for raising this issue, I made some remarks regarding the plastic at the beginning of the review, but I forgot to write more substantive ones at the end, highlighting the glue-able and paint-able attributes of the material.

Indeed, this soft plastic is very glue-able with super glue gel (I used Loctite super attack).
Regarding the conversions, I made some just for testing the properties of the material, I used few Caesar, Dragon and Preiser items of gear cast in hard plastic. In addition, I used a Zvezda palm (for the guy in quilted jacket), an Orion palm and head (for the officer) and a Modelltrans resin head (for the guy in quilted jacket). In addition, all the rest of the heads are swapped between the poses. I have to say that all these parts excellent glue, the bond being very strong. Likewise, painting is fine, the material does not influence the initial propensities of the colours.

On the other hand, this soft plastic has the bed habit to produce some fluffs when cleaning the flash, seam lines, and excess of material, I hate this because it takes a lot of time for a satisfactory appearance....:)

Once again, warm thanks for the message and on Monday, I shall add to the review few lines regarding the above mentioned issues.
