Nappy Cavalry Project Regt #6 - Prussian Dragoons

Posted by Marvin on 08 Jul 2015, 16:17

Hello!

The latest regiment in the ongoing Nappy Cavalry thing I've been doing for 2015 is... the Prussian 5th Brandenburg Regiment of Dragoons.

Tough assignment this though: they're not the most perfectly sculpted figures. These are from the Italeri Prussian Light Cavalry set which gets well and truly trashed by Plastic Soldier Review!
http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/review.aspx?id=1094

The horses were a bit ...odd. :? In fact, I decided I just couldn't use them! So i swapped them with Italeri Prussian Cuirassier horses I had spare, adding some home-made accoutrements to make them look a bit more like a 'dragoon' horse.

Finally, to complete the regiment, I also added a mounted Jager figure converted from the flag bearer and holding a Zvezda French Cuirassier carbine.

Best wishes,

Marvin

The next regiment (after a summer holiday break): French Dragoons? ;-)

One of the worst Italeri sets if you ask me. But you did them justice.
When looking at those I almost want to paint them... :-D

Thanks! And yes, I'd like to see you (and anybody else for that matter) have a go at these! ;-)

I looked on this set from the first as being a challenge, a case of making a flawed set look as good as I could. I don't think the sculpter could do limbs (horse or human) particularly wellt. But there's some merit in the faces, I think.

Truly a blown opportunity for Italeri to make this set right, but the change of mounts and your painting brings them up a few notches. I prefer to look at your good work rather than buy them myself.

Yes, I agree. Never mind changing those horses, at times I even thought about changing the riders too... ;-)

Lucky you, I got a box of them as part of a trade. I'm not gonna complain, I got two boxes of the comparably bad infantry, but it was fun painting them, and they don't look as bad as you'd think - tho sadly I could only make a single unit of 24 line infantry (22 as a matter of fact, had to cheat on this), and I have a whole bunch of leftover figs I'm not sure what gonna do with. Maybe I'll convert all of them to Landwehr with some greenstuff.
