Originally the Macedonian army probably used mainly red and white textile colors.
But after the occupation of Persian ruled Phoenicia Alexanders army suddenly faced itself with lots of purple and saffron yellow colored textile and quantities of pigment. The purper was coming from the murex shells found on phoenician beaches. Up till then, this purple color was only available for the elite and had always been unaffordable for the ordinary man in the rank and file. But now the purple was there for free so everybody wanted to wear that color.

So Elsi's beautifully painted Macedonians represent the army from 333 BC and after.
