Marian Roman DBA Army

Posted by despertaferro on 28 Apr 2016, 12:53

Dear colleagues,

Here I’m, like there it was not more tomorrow days, trying to match the crazy shooting of a TV series with some painting... Well, I’m getting old and I don’t need so much sleeping but, still, I’ll have to slow down my postings, work goes first… :-D

I’m starting a new DBA project: Marian Roman Army (105BC-47BC). This is the Roman Army that suits for later Republican period, Caesarean conquests and the Civil Wars (Optimates vs Populares, Caesar vs Pompey).

This first bunch is the core of any Roman army, the heavy legionary infantry. 8 x 4Blades bases made with Caesar and Italeri figures. All the Scutum and Pila that you can see are the ones provided by the Caesar set. Because I would like to double them for Civil Wars settings, I’ll use the Italeri Scutums and Pilas on the second group.

Like a curiosity, some of the Italeri figures seem to wear a moustache. I didn’t paint it, because, to my understanding, that is incorrect. At least until the Imperial period when most of the legions were totally made by non-Roman citizens and auxiliaries, and, most probably, the legionaries follow their own culture haircut fashion (hard to believe that a cohort of Batavian legionaries garrisoning a post at the Imperial borders would care to shave their beards daily…)

And that’s all folks, I hope you like them and many thanks for your time.

This is just another great ancient army of Despertaferro.

Are you the director? Whatever your function is in that Spanish TV series, it answers one of my questions. Also it looks like your real job made you missing my little tribute to your work 8 days ago, turning up with some new attention to your Polybian Roman Army which is so great but was posted before my membership-period in this Forum.

Superb! I am always delighted when I see a color scheme that looks realistic and convicing for ancient (or any other pre-modern) figures. Those guys simply did not use those bright artificial dyes that we have today; the dull red on your scuta is a very good choice.

Nice brushwork; like that dirty coat you put on your figures a lot. :yeah: What's the technique: wash, ink, quickshade, etc.?
Just I find ranks a bit disordered for a Roman army

Many thanks for your comments folks!

Mr. Cryns, I feel sorry for not answering your question… (it is not the first time that someone ask me if I do some work for living or just paint… :-D :-D :-D )

The truth is that I do work: I’m a director of photography. I do Big Screen Movies, TV Drama or Series and Commercials. I’m a freelance, so I work for any company on any country that hires my skills. Working days/weeks/months are long, exhausting and, sometimes, far away from home. But between jobs, I can devote my time just to paint all day long and taking care of my beloved wife and daughters… Not having any other hobby, that means a lot of painting :-D

Mr. Andrea, yes you’re right… but bases with a single pose repeated 4 times are too boring and static for my tastes and not giving any sense of movement or action… I guess my legionaries just engaged the enemy and, no matter how disciplined they are, is hard to synchronize movements when a warband of naked Celts is trying to chop your head off… :-D

An old technique I abandoned, but still the best performing IMHO. Time to travel back to the past 8)

Sure you do but I was teasing my friend Konrad a little bit, because he is the one who is building a big Roman army! ;-) :-D

I've had my eyes on this set for a long time for use as Principes in a polyibian army. But with only two poses, and those not being my favorite, I've stayed away. You did a great job of combining them to show a lot of energy and movement. I do like the mounted leader that comes with this set though and based on your results I might have to pick this set up after all.
