New to the forum, plus Hellenistic pikemen

Posted by ChrisB on 03 Jul 2019, 02:13

I've lurked around here for a while, but I decided to finally join and post. I wanted to build a phalanx diorama a few years back but abandoned the project. Seeing some of the work others have done on here has inspired me to pick it up again since I have a little bit of free time.

Anyway, just finished painting a batch of soldiers. Here's what I've got. Let me know if anyone has any suggestions (sorry for some strange shots, the lighting can be strange in my apartment)

Welcome to you! There is always room for one more-especially someone who paints and models as well as you do.

How did you make the spears and secure them to the men?

Very nice, I particularly like the way You've done the various types of armour.

Too bad their enemies won't get anywhere near enough to appreciate how good they look but these guys will make a very impressive phalanx.

I made the pikes out of broom bristles. Recently I found a broom with metallic/silver colored bristles that made the whole process easier...now I only have to paint the wooden part. I experimented with a few ways to make the spear tips, but I settled on using pliers. One tight squeeze for the point, one lighter squeeze a few millimeters down for the shaft. Then I trim the point down a little. It's pretty fast.

The figures are various metals, some with head swaps. Here are some more (with a few plastic Zvezda and HaT conversions mixed in)

Below are a few more, the last of this batch. The last is based on the famous armor found at the tomb of Philip (either Philip II or III, it's up for debate) at Vergina. That armor was for kings, not for some infantryman (even if he is an officer), so we'll say its an "economy version" (bronze instead of gold, etc.)

Leonid Kireev wrote:Professional painting! And who is the manufacturer?

So, in my first post:
-The first is a converted hypaspist from Hagen Miniatures: his head comes from a phalangite from the same manufacturer, and I replaced his right arm with another with a ring hand from a Zvezda phalangite so that he can serve in the phalanx.
-The second is from Daydream miniatures with a head swap.
-The third is from ART miniaturen, with a head swap from a Hagen phalangite
-The fourth is also from ART miniaturen, unaltered
-The fifth is from Hagen miniatures, with a head swap

In my second post:
-The first is from a Daydream Miniatures phalangite, with the head of 15mm Macedonian from Xyston (I bought a few sets of 15mms on a whim, and it turned out that some have big heads that fit well with 20mm soldiers). I made his scale armor out of green stuff.
-The second is another Daydream Miniatures phalangite, with just a head swap
-The third and sixth are from Hagen Minatures, also with new heads
-The fourth and fifth are plastics from HaT and Zvezda respectively, with new heads

In this last post:
The first is from Hagen miniatures, unaltered; the second is from Zvezda, with an officer's head; the last is from Daydream

I made so many head swaps because I wanted most of them to have crests on their helmets; these will be the officers in my phalanx

I will post pictures of the phalanx soon. I'm getting ready to base all of these guys. I'll take pictures and open a new topic in the "works in progress" section, since my phalanx is still very much a work in progress.

I have some xyston 15mm can't remember why but you are right the heads are a good fit for 1/72 20mm figures!

This is going to be an impressive phalanx... I'm excited to see this! Fantastic work!
