Apparently Kubrick was going to make a film about the life of Napoleon, but the project got too expensive. But by then he had a ton of research and ideas for a film set in that era. So he opted for a different, fictional story set during the Seven Years War. The film is also known for its pioneering use of natural lighting.
Welp, I have it downstairs. I may just go watch it again.
