Barry Lyndon is one of my very favorite films. It is very interesting how the narrator is critical of Barry throughout, but is often clearly wrong.

Actually I've never seen the film, I'll have to pick up the DVD sometime because it seems everybody praises it.

Apparently Kubrick was going to make a film about the life of Napoleon, but the project got too expensive. But by then he had a ton of research and ideas for a film set in that era. So he opted for a different, fictional story set during the Seven Years War. The film is also known for its pioneering use of natural lighting.

Welp, I have it downstairs. I may just go watch it again.
