Just having a break from my Magnesia project painting up some brand new 20mm sets from Sean at Newline Designs. Here we have a Seleucid command set for trouser wearing pikemen and some command figures for Maccabean Foot of the Phalanx:

I love the metal work on the Seleucids, very effective colour schemes on all the figures, the red and white spot colours contrast nicely with the blue.

How do you find the Newline range? I find that, for the most part, plastic 1/72 miniatures do fine for me (I do quite a bit of green stuff converting) but I do like having unit variety. I've always preferred plastic because of metal chipping though.

I really enjoy painting this range and the details are nice and crisp. I very much like Sean's sculpting style.

I have many plastic sets I was using to make up various troop types but needed some gaps filled which Newline covered but on receiving some I preferred them and decided to replace most of my plastic sets.

My only real concern with plastics for ancients is a few of the sets have flat poses which look a bit strange to my eye.

I think I also prefer working with metal I find it a bit easier but that could also be experience having now prepared and painted more metal than plastics.

Green stuff is something I find quite scarey :-D

but I have been trying a bit recently and hope to improve with it. I am always in awe of those who do alot of conversions with it!

Oh I'm not going to pretend I have any special insight with green-stuff, I mostly use it to fill gaps and create joins with limbs. For example, to break up poses I might swap arms between minis, green-stuff the joins which allows me to alter the pose to different angles as well. I wouldn't even know how to begin properly sculpting a full mini, but I find it very helpful because even little headswaps and so forth make for effective conversions IMO.
