4th Hussards

Posted by Bill Slavin on 30 Apr 2022, 14:26

Here are some more hussars I painted up recently, this time the French 4th Hussards and almost straight out of the box (although i couldn't resist a couple of head swaps for the elite stand). These Italeri are, without doubt, one of my favourite sets to paint - the sculpting is beautiful and the figures full of the elan that a hussar set should have! They will join the 3rd on my Peninsular battlefields.
I have a few more photos and a bit of history of this unit on my blog if you are interested.

Another wonderful and very colourful unit for your collection, Bill. Your painting on those fantastic Italeri figures is superb.

Superb Bill. The Italeri Hussars was one of their finest sets, full of detail and action poses. You make them come to life and that dapple gray bugler steed is my favorite.

Absolutely wonderful stuff Bill. The colours used really make these looks so realistic.

Delightful as usual Bill. Someone has mentioned it before but your work also reminds yours truly of that of the late great Peter Gilder! His involvement in Tyne Tees “Battleground” presented by the actor Edward Woodward was most definitely one of the most magical memories I have of childhood. I have a particularly strong memory of a battle re fought between Attila and his Huns and a Roman army. As such you can see how inspiring your work is to me good sir.

Ps/ However, I have a question for you that baffles me. I can see you haven’t used the majestic officer’s horse from this exceptional box of Italeri Hussars. Is there any particular reason why? (Or is it there and I was unable to spot it)?

Hi all,
Thanks for the very kind comments.

k.b. I confess I hadn’t realized there was a specific officer’s horse but looking again at the set I see there is one horse rearing more majestically! For some reason I don’t think that horse was used (I used 12 of the 16 figures) so it must have gone to the spares box!

A superb unit of French hussars, well done!

It seems almost indecent to expose such finely-clothed cavalrymen to the rigours of the Peninsular campaign...all that sun, rain, dust etc... :-D
