Voluntarios de Sevilla - mixing it up

Posted by Bill Slavin on 10 Jun 2022, 15:38

A few months ago I shared my Voluntarios de Sevilla, a militia unit raised in Spain in 1808. They began life as the HaT Austrian Landwehr but their top hats and uniform cut matched the Voluntarios de Sevilla well. I decided to mix them up a bit with a few conversions to make them look more ragtag - here are my attempts at conversion, mixed in with a few normal figures so they would integrate with the first regiment.

There are a few more photos here on the blog.

And here they are integrated in with the first regiment.

Very nice Bill.

The ragged nature of the troops makes them well suited to the rigours of campaigning .

Best wishes ,

A fine-looking unit, and an imaginative alternative use for the HaT Austrian Landwehr. The mixing of headgear, the striped trousers worn by some (and how awkward painting stripes can be in this scale!) and overall 'less-than-uniform' look gives these troops an authentic Peninsular War appearance. Well done!

Your creativity never ceases to amaze me Bill. Austrian landwehr heads (and Hat… of all makes) for Spanish Voluntarias de Sevilla - bleeding hell are you taking the mickey out of us or am I just a retard! Either you have the best filing system in the world or your brain is an encyclopaedia of the Napoleonic era.
Well done ……… and just having the audacity to paint striped trousers in this scale deserves a medal (regardless of how wonky they are)!

Thanks all. They look pretty funky up close (my stripes are the best I can do with these poor eyes  ) but I DO love doing conversions. It’s become a bit addictive…
K.B. I pulled together a pile of Pinterest pages on the Spanish a few years ago when I started doing the Peninsular War, and between those and a friend who knows all things Spanish from that era, it helps me find units that match what I have at hand. I also now have Summerfield’s book, although that mostly focuses on the old Spanish line and light regiments.

One of my favorite treats here at Bennos Figure Forum is clicking on the pictures any time Bill Slavin releases another of his excellent and unique Peninsula War units. They never disappoint!

Another lovely addition to your Peninsular armies, Bill.
It is always a pleasure to see them appearing on this forum. I admire your creativity in figure conversion.
Thanks for sharing.
