Recently bought a book at the Antiquarian Bookstore and when I opened it a couple of old pictures fell out. There where some text written on the back of them and I'll show them here:

The first one says: "We started out from Susofrick Junction, Sir Alfred Toby, Mr Benjamin Butterbur, Mr James Winterbottom, Mr William Pommeroy, Dr Napoleon B. Brown and Admiral Adalbert von Schneider. With us is the Admiral's two dogs Nuff and Spud."

The second one:

"Sir Toby and Mr Butterbur on a lion hunt."

The third:

"Lord John Greystoke meets Yorick, the deadie"

Fourth:

"Outside the walls of Syrinx with Centurion Bvayyan and his lizard men. The priests were reluctant to let us in, but Lord Greystoke had a talk with them."

Fifth:

"Mr Pommeroy ate something unpleasant".

There can be more pics in other books at the bookstore. I'll keep searching!

Those old time guys back in the day certainly knew how to take pictures,and I`m glad you found that ancient book ,and were able to read about this intrepid expedition and those who were involved in it.All thier names set down for the historical record too. This was a great find Gunnar,yes indeed.The record shows that they had great names for thier pet dogs too,and these Mutts must have been brave and loyal to follow these idiots on a Lion Hunt.I`m glad you were able to restore the old picture of Mr Pommeroy who ate something unpleasent,and the way this poor fellow lays there in agony reminds me of my first wife and her cooking. Glad she left before killing me.........Well Gunnar,I have so enjoyed this story....................Now perhaps I`m not the only Mad Member spinning Ripping Yarns on this Forum.

Thanks! I'll continue to look for more pics, but that will probably mean I'll have to buy more used books. Not all of them are nice, but this one was quite nice. It smelled of good cigars and old whisky. :-D

Back again. I have found two more pics, but also some letters. These are written in Swedish to a neice here in Sweden. They are signed by "your uncle A." and I had some trouble before I found out that uncle A. must be admiral Adalbert von Schneider. No idea how he could write Swedish, but apparently he had relatives here. It will take a while before I can translate the letters and maybe there are more pics out there. First a family photo of the von Schneider family:

And here is a photo with the strange title "We are welcomed in Syrinx". Don't know what that means. Yet.

Nice old photo`s Gunnar,I bet the names of those Big Mutt`s are in those letter`s along with all those named family member`s in the pictures too.(However them Mutt`s do look like Nuff! and Spud!) Best way to translate quick, is read with the book in one hand and scribble away with a pen in the other. Or twice as fast by holding two pen`s .Syrinx means a form of communication,like what birds do in song. Or in this case of communication perhaps you yourself trying to translate these old letters for our benifit. i will look forward to seeing what turns up next.

This is a lovely story. Word out of Canada is that the priests of Syrinx are not very fond of guitar music. Have you heard that as well?

As I said in another topic, "A project ain't dead until it's finished". :-D

I've started to translate the letters and put them together with the pics I BELIEVE they belong to. This is pure guessing from my part. Sometimes very easy, sometimes not so easy. No date what so ever in any letter.

First pic was very easy.

"Dear niece

Here is a picture of me, your aunt, your cousins and our two dogs, Nuff and Spud. We decided to take tha picture outside Well's Fargo's office because the photographer was reluctant to leave town and come out to the house. I hope that all is well with you and the rest of the family. Give my regards to your mother.

Your

Uncle A."

That's it! Not very exciting. But there are more letters and I will keep you updated.

Okay! I've translated two more letters.

"Dear niece. I am going on an expedition. Our destination is secret, but I hope that I will be able to send letters and photographs to you. Here you see the members of the expedition. Sitting in the front row is our leader, Sir Alfred Toby and our hunting expert Mr Benjamin Butterbur. In the back row is our medical expert Dr Napoleon B. Brown, our photographer Mr William Pommeroy, our second hunter, Mr James Winterbottom, and yours truly. I haven't decided yet if I shall bring Nuff and Spud on the expedition. Give my regards to all in Sweden. Your Uncle A."

Not much excitement there either.

Number two. There can be letters and photos missing here.

"Deear niece. Here is a photograph that Mr Pommeroy took of Sir Alfred and Mr Butterbur on a lion hunt. They were lucky that Mr Winterbottom could scare the lions away. I am beginning to have serious doubts about Mr Butterbur's skills as a hunter. He is a decent enough fellow, but there is something about him that makes me think. Both Nuff and Spud are happy on this adventure with all the new strange smells. Give my regards to your mother and father and little brother. Your uncle A."

At last something seem to happen in the letters and pictures. More will come!
