Often is the case with me is the fact that as I start a certain something like these Pond`s it is a step into the unknown, because to be quite frank about it I never totally know what the outcome will be.Don`t get me wrong,I know how to scrape out a hole, and paint it & fill it with stuff to resemble a large puddle or pond.It is using the other stuff that I am unsure of.
So I am at this point applying some clear Varnish because I don`t know how the PVA Glue and the Realistic Water will react when in contact with each other. So I decided to place the Varnish between the two to avoid cracking of the finished pond....
Brushing it on is simple enough, and I`m using a flat brush to just seal it over the area of the final pour which will create the finished pond look.
Now I must just add at this point, that pond`s have been modelled in this way for ages using layer`s of cheap, very cheap Clear Varnish, and I intend to make another pond using that old system, but for this Topic as you know I am going to use Realistic Water......
Perfect reflection quality if one wanted to use Clear Varnish! I decided to use one Horse near the smaller pond.
One Horse simply stuck down using PVA Glue and covering the base with it it too,and a good amount of Kiln Dried Sand is poured on.
I applied the same Glue all over this side of the base and poured and heaped the sand on it and left it to dry.Why not use the Clay? Good point ,so thank you for your indirect thought and question. This side of the pond is going to be not so thick and built up as the otherside, and I must admit using the clay would cause me to have real problems working around the Horse.Another thing is the colour in the clay is quite hard to wash off ones hand`s and I did not want to end up with this red dye on the Horse. One thing I must state at this time.Using this Clay has caused my base to bend up which is not a perfect condition for pouring stuff onto it that has to find its own leval. The Base should have been one of sturdy flat wood or a large cheap floor tile. Or in the use of Reinforced Air Drying Clay. The actual base modelled on a large flat area and when hard and painted and the pond poured, and finished then removed as hard as Rock having no need for a base under it at all. I did not have this option because I could not obtain this type of clay. However I have now obtained a great deal of this reinforcd clay now that is used in schools. It will be hard in 10 or 12 hours after use,and as hard as Kiln Baked Clay in 24 hours. However this project is a Steep Learning Curb and the lessions taught will stand me in good stead in and on future projects which will avoid all the pitfall`s encounted so far with this project.
......
The first glue has been applied and sand heaped up on it,and has dried,so another lot of glue is added so as to help create a good uneven ground, and the sand is heaped on again. Heaped sand will force sand into the glue and will help the glue dry out really fast.Soon before the glue has gone hard, the sand can be removed leaving a good sanding to all area`s ,and stippled all over to create hoof mark`s and also help create shadows. Shadow`s the eye of the Camera can pick up giving hopefully a much better Photo. The Clay for the same reason has been stippled with this in view too. ( Or perhaps there are lot`s of Bunnies! )
I prefure to use an old brush this way up and like so.
( As you can see lot`s going on on the Table besides this topic. The making of tree`s,and conversions on figures).....
Using a larger brush the rather dark stuff in my Jar is dabed on and around each and every Horse, and paper kitchen roll is dabed all over it too similar to how I did the Clay! Then using a small brush to do it close up work around and under the horses can be done.
.....
I`m pleased with the look that is taking place......
I realise the work so far has been rather long in showing you just how these two pond`s are being formed and by what process. So thank`s once again for following along. Reaching the point of dry brushing now and with other stuff added and the Pour onto the Pond`s. So that update coming soon.
