Later Carthaginian DBA Armies

Hi,

After the romans here we have the later Carthaginians (275BC-146BC) coming...

Same as with the romans, I began these armies long time ago. You will see the painting differences between the old figures (soft focus and in the background ) and the recent one’s (sharp and in the foreground ).

I completed the cavalry bases first, so here we have the Generals (Cavalry), the Light Horse and the Cavalry. Because most part of any Carthaginian army was made of mercenaries, two of the command bases are Punic African, one is a Numidian allied King (Massinissa) and the other is Punic-Iberian mercenary command. The Light Horse is Numidian and the Cavalry has one base made of Punic healthy citizens while the other is of Celtic-Celtiberian mercenaries.

These are some of the best ancient painted soldiers I've seen. You've been able to give them this dusty scruffy look which makes them look incredibly realistic and ancient, I have seen a lot of ancient soldiers, but usually they look too clean, or simply muddy, but yours look dusty and at the same time they give a sensation you are really watching a battle of 2000 years ago.

You inspire me to try to replicate your style of paint in my next ancient soldiers I paint!

Hi there,

Here we have some new bases for my later Carthaginian DBA armies.

These are 10 x 2Psiloi (Skirmishers) bases (4 bases of Libyan tribesmen, 3 of Balearic slingers and 3 of Numidian), 6 x 3Warband (3 bases of Gallic and 3 of Celtiberian mercenaries), 2 x 3Auxilia (Iberian Scutarii) and 2 x 4Auxilia (Punic citizens).

As you know, Carthaginian armies were mostly made by hired mercenary warriors. Hence the multinational nature of them and the variety of troop types, due to the fact that every nation fought in their own way.

This has been a long term project, so only the bases pictured in the foreground are new, being the old ones, for obvious raisons , carefully hided on the background and soft focus.

Figures are from Hat, Zvezda, Orion, Revell, Italeri and Airfix.

Wow, these soldiers are seeming really to be alive. Absolutly impressive! There are mostly Hät-figures, am I right? And can you write some sentences which colours you have used to get them so perfect, please!

Sorry for taking so long to answer you, sansovino. I wasn’t at home these days.

It is hard to tell you the colors because I use dozens of them. I work with Enamels and try to use four or five different shades of every main color (red, yellow, green, blue, brown, grey, black or white). I never use the cleanest version, always the duller or grayer shade of every color. For example, regarding to red, I use mostly a kind of “dry blood” shade of it, or some “brick red” or “red wine” shades as well. Regarding to yellow, I go for a very pale version of it or some different intensities of an ochre yellow shade. Except for flags, I always try to avoid “pure” colors. But most of the dull effect of my painting relies on the washing.

Hi,

With these bases my 4 DBA Later Carthaginian Armies are finally completed!

12 bases of 4Spears representing the core of the Carthaginian Infantry. The figures depict how these warriors were dressed over a long lapse of time, from the more Hellenistic style of the early period to the Sacred Band and the veterans of the Hannibal’s invasion of Italy, mostly outfitted with captured roman equipment.

4 bases of War Elephants. The fact that they look so small is not a mistake, because the elephants used by the Carthaginians were the Forest Elephant, a species long time ago disappeared and smaller that they Indian or African relatives.
