Russia 1812 Napoleons Retreat Diorama

Posted by sansovino on 01 Feb 2015, 18:26

Winter-time

I have built two years ago this diorama of Napoleons retreat from Moscou. I have used figures from many different producers, mostly from Hät and Strelets, but there were at first the wonderful Schilling miniatures to this horrible winter-disaster which gave me the motivation to build this diorama. And of course, I had alternate many figures - with provisoric winter-clothes and in theirs action - to create more realism.

Unfortunatly I couldn´t managed it to take realistic photos of my diorama. I have used glimmering winter-blast from Noch for the snow, which works wonderful well. Unfortunatly this "snow" is only white and too bright in my coloured photos. It doesn´t glimmering, what it´s a pity. So I want also to ask, if somebody can give me a hint how to photograph it better. Meanwhile I will present the Sepia-photos.

Dear Kekso,

I am really not happy with the coloured photos - the colours are also too strong in the photos (reflection of the "snow"?), but here are some more ....

sansovino, sometimes a camera does not give a clear cool picture of what the Artist has Created. So I hope you do not mind that I have put these pictures on my silly money PC in order to give a better definition to your outstanding work. Sorry i cannot make the snow shimmer or shine like a thousand small cut diamonds.

In true spirit of fellowship sansovino,i hope my action meets with your approval.

After looking at all your snow ,I`m off to put the heating up. Paul

Wow, That is really cool. The first pictures looks like a scene from a "War and Peace" - Movie!

Looks just like here. Except the soldiers and the cossacks. Haven't been out in a while so not really sure about the last.

Dreary, depressing, and very very cool. Excellent photos all around.

Ok here is my impersonation of a guy sitting on a fence!

I like all of the photos. Seriously I do. I think they all show off your work well. Just depends on what you are looking for in a photo. As someone who struggles mightily taking pictures I know it is less than an exact science.

What I like about some of the photos (color and b&w) is that a few look like paintings or artist type renditions of battle. Pretty cool in my opinion.

Great work.

At first, many thanks to Beano Boy, who has really surprised me with his photo-shop-arts.

And than many thanks to all others. It´s interesting to read your views to the different kind of photos. I will try to get still better photos of the diorama. It isn´t only the glimmer, the snow has also many different structures/traces which are disappearing mostly in the actual photos - trial and error, we will see what I can still achieve.
