Cossacks! (Nappy Cavalry Project Regt #11)

Posted by Marvin on 15 Oct 2015, 19:59

Hi everyone,

Thank you sincerely for all your support in the Nappy Cavalry Project so far this year. I've tackled Zvezda's Lifeguard Cossacks on this occasion. Nice figures from Zvezda once again, I think.

I tried to depict their hardy horses as being the Don breed, i.e. mostly chestnut-coloured ponies. Oh and I've added some snow on this occasion too!

A couple more regiments to go in this project, I think, before the final end of year "parade".

Thanks for looking - more pics on my blog post - https://suburbanmilitarism.wordpress.com/2015/10/15/lifeguard-cossacks-nappy-cavalry-project-set-11/

Next regiment? French Carabiniers by Italeri! :-D

Cheerio until next time,

Marvin

Hi Marvin,
These look very nice, I particularly like the subtle shading on the horses.
What did you use to make the snow?

Hi

Glad you like them! For the snow, I was going to use Bicarbonate of Soda but read that this will discolour and ultimately absorbs water and so turns to mulch. So I decided to buy some of this stuff instead. Not sure if you can get it in the states?

I've got lots of Strelets Russo-Turkish War troops that will be crying out for this stuff too. :-)

I wish I could drool, but I run out of saliva because of your nappy cavalry project. Bravo! Chapeau! I am happy that the final parade is getting closer. Are you planning also irregular cossacks? They should have a place in the parade. I understand there are not many around and that Hat box is not really appealing. Art Miniaturen set (http://www.schmaeling.de/napoleonische-epoche/russen/russische-kosaken-1.php) is nice, not in plastic, not charging, but nice.

Beautiful as always. Not sure if you intended the effect, but in the second picture it looks like the galloping horse is kicking up the snow! Awesome effect or lucky picture? Who cares, it looks cool to me.

Well, it's a complicated and delicate process involving the skillfull application of... oh, alright I admit - it was just luck! ;-)

@Mr. Andrea - I like those figures alot, proper cossacks! Time is running out for the end of year review so they may have to wait until 2016.

Yep! Absolutely splendid bunch of Cossacks though I doubt very much if they would have such similar coloured horses!
There are two elements that i particularly like...... The first is the beautiful snow effects you got in your bases and the second is the white plumes....... they look real ! Did you use the snow on them too?

Thanks KB! Yes, those Don horses were just a conceit of mine rather than a nod to any historical reality. ;-)

The plumes are just painted actually. Recently I've started dulling down my white colour used in uniforms by mixing an Off White with a generous application of light grey. I'm hoping it will pay dividends with my French carabiniers white uniforms I'm working on.
