Nappy Cavalry Project - My penultimate regiment...

Posted by Marvin on 28 Oct 2015, 20:01

Warm greetings to all. I present my second-to-last regiment in this year's Nappy Cavalry Project; the 1st regiment of Carabiniers a Cheval. Figures by Italeri, another of their very finest sets I think.

I've painted them on black horses which was the ideal rather than the reality when on campaign. I demand parade ground smartness from my regiments and so found them all black mounts. This was a fun set to do with their brass cuirasses and white uniforms. Just one more regiment to go I think, (you may be relieved to hear) - plus a special guest and entourage to paint for the final 'parade' in December.

Plenty of blurb and more pics on my blog here: https://suburbanmilitarism.wordpress.com/2015/10/28/1st-carabiniers-a-cheval-nappy-cavalry-project-set-12/

The next and final :( regiment will be French Cuirassiers - can't have a Nappy cavalry project without some of these, can I? ;-) .

My favorite Napoleonic unit. I'm so happy to see you painted them.
Another eye candy from your painting desk :occasion:

Yip! I Like E`m All. These can also be painted in a very light blue too. Napoleon wanted them to have red uniforms, but he was overruled. BB

Top notch painting on these Nappy horsemen. Quite striking with their brass helmets and chest armor. Detail brush work is amazing.

Fantastic as usual. Just another day at the office for Marvin! :-D Is there any idea or detail you can share with us about the last regiment.

Beautiful figures! How do you manage to get the white paint looking so good on these figures? I always experience trouble when I use white.

BB - I didn't know that about the red uniforms. Glad he was overruled though!

Thanks, Captain Jozef - I used a 2:1 mix of sky grey with off white. Then I shaded with a pale grey wash. At this point it's looking distinctly non-white! I "think" I then dry-brushed highlights with another mix of sky grey / white until it started to look whiter again. The photos make the white lost a little detail and look a little brighter than meets the eye. All I can say is that I decided to be a bit brave and go bit greyer than usual!.

very nice stuff indeed: the thing that strikes me most are the cuirasses themselves. Nice shade indeed.
Keep feeding us with such delights.

Thank you Salaberry. Those cuirasses are painted using Vallejo's acrylic Metallic Brass. I'm trying to think if I did anything in particular with them... I almost dry-brushed rather than painted the colour on. This allowed just a hint of the black primer to show through which creates a nicer shade. Leaving a little bit of black lining around the edges of things helps too I think.

Thanks again,

Marvin

Love 'em Marvin! In particular I admire your determination in painting all the horses black! It certainly highlights the bright colours of their uniforms. I sympathise with your comments about the limitations of photography. One other interesting point I noticed was your choice of placing the carbine firing trooper on the beautifully sculpted officers horse! What were your motives behind that?
Would also like to know if you glue your figures to their horses and if so which glue you use and whether you do so before or after painting?
Thanks in advance and can't wait to see your cuirassiers!

Thanks KB. I've seen your versions, so I'm glad you like 'em. As for the carbine trooper on the officer's horse - I didn't realise that it was an officer's horse is the embarrassed answer!

I use this stuff - http://www.unibond.co.uk/en/diy-adhesives/multi-purpose-repair/unibond-repair-extreme.html
My figures are never used on the wargame table so for simple display purposes it does the trick. It's transparent and is thick enough to 'grab' the figure quickly but still allow easy repositioning. I glue them together only when I've finished all the painting and varnishing of both figures and horses.

Meanwhile, cuirassiers are in progress... ;-)

Cheers,

Marvin
