05:25 Sunrise, Patrol in the sky

Japanese pilot :
strait ahead a convoy of American transport, send a message to the base, they're coming toward us.

Japanese radio operator : There's also two fighters above us high in the sky.

Corsair one : look at this Japanese seaplane, they're scouting over the sea, it's a job for us

Corsaire two : received, follow me

tacatacatacatacatacata......tacatacataca.......tacatacata

Japanese pilot :
our engine is broken I'm landing on the sea, too much smoke, did you sent the message to the base?

Japanese radio operator : yes, but I don't know if they received it, my radio is broken too now, I can't receive anything.

Japanese pilot :
We're stuck here in the middle of nowhere on the sea, what are we gonna do now ?

Japanese radio operator : Maybe some fishing ?

06:30 AIR ATTACK

A massive force of US Navy fighters and bombers are coming over the beach, japanese forces are on alert, they're sending their best fighters but it's hardly enough to stop the powerful navy fighters like the Corsair and F6 hellcat who are keeping Zero aways so the dive bombers like the Dauntless and the Avenger can do their jobs on japanese defenses.

09:00 The first wave

The tracked LVT made their way over the reef the tide had still not risen enough to allow the Higgins boats to clear the reef. so the Marines under heavy fire are able to secure a beach head but unable to make some progress with enemy machine guns, artillery and mortar firing from trench and bunkers not destroyed by air attack.

12:15 The second wave

The level of the sea allow now all the landing ship to reach the beach, some Sherman tank with deep wading kit can reach the sand and overcome Japanese defense, supported by more and more Marines coming by Higgins boats, so the Japanese forces have to retreat or being destroyed by a mighty firepower. Some tanks are lost in the sea, fell into hole caused by bombs or artillery shells and sank, some others were disabled by mines. But enough of them took part to the battle to enlarge the beach head enough to secure the beach. Many tracked LVT can't be used anymore because being not armored they're too badly holed to remain seaworthy.

13:10 Supply and reinforcement

The beach being secure, the big LCT-6 and Dukw can unload all the material and supply necessary for the offensive. The Sherman with dozer blade eliminated the trench and opened the way inside the island.

15:50 The battle moved inland

The US armored division and Marines made some progress into Japanese deep defense system, covering left and right flank by artillery position. Inside the village and around hidden bunkers progress are slow and the battle is hard fought with a lot of losses on both side, but on the left through the jungle a column of light tank Stuart found a small tray to bypass heavy defenses and remain undetected. The Japanese launched a counter offensive with their tank on the center but it was quickly stopped by Sherman platoons and artillery fire. A battery of Japanese heavy gun is causing a lot of havoc too.

The ingenuity, hard work, creative thought and attention to detail make this project, in my opinion one of the best I have had the pleasure to see.

My wife, Der Feldmarschall, suggests that if you warm the cotton wool, thus fluffing it up and then spray it with a modelling dye the smoke will look fantastic.

That sea brings back memories of ' The Pacific' and my diving exploits in Truk Lagoon.

Brilliant.
