With this Dio I try to build a night scene. Tankhunter: Marder II.
I think far more shades of grey are needed.
IR Test (Infrared Test) is more common as UR (Ultrared) who was so called at this time.
In 1942/43 UR test are started with more intense. In 1944/45 some small units use UR equippment for battle.
As an example at the eastern front with the tank Panther, Veruchszug Haas (Test platoon Haas).
Problems with UR technics at this time: You can`t decide of fried tank or enemy tank.
Won`t work at rain properly, Won`t work by snowing properly. A snow plain is too light (The white area) During full moon nights without clouds and aroud that time it is so light that UR is no need. Especially in the western europe part during the short summer nights. The Commander is with his head outside the turret during the battle (Tank Panther). With UR you see only some hundert meter. You need a support car (Sdkfz 251 UHU) to see more deeper.
Impressive is the small light dot of the cigarette if you paint all in gray, dark gray wash.
The radio operator: "Do we hit the target?"
"On the way." From your Point of view the drivers UR right. And for the gunner on top the UR.
The radio voice answers: "Bulls eye! You konck out the commanders red wine bottle for tonight !"
