Gaius Popilius Laenas' legendary diplomatic mission

Posted by chen on 02 Jun 2016, 08:13

Last year when reading the book of Polybius I was deeply impressed by the story of Popilius, in which he, all alone, stops the ambitious Antiochus IV's whole army at the gate of Egypt by a single and simple gesture. For a detailed account you can refer to the link below:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaius_Popillius_Laenas

Therefore I made a vignette depicting this legendary scene. "Before you step out of that circle give me a reply to lay before the senate."

Wow, what a great scene! Fantastic paintjob and an excellent choice of an unusual subject!
(Just a minor remark: As a senator, Popilius would have had broad purple stripes on both sides of his tunica, running from the shoulders downwards. If you google for "latus clavus" you may find lots of pics).

What a story! I never heard of. And what a fine vignette! What figures do you use for it? Are they from HäT?

Wonderful work. I like how you have painted the main characters to draw the focus and dramatic attention, and the faces of the soldiers are understated because they are just background. What is the role or rank of the official with the blue hat?

Thanks for your nice comments, mates. Yes, I'm back, and I'll try to be productive this year. :-D

And especially thank you, Stephan! A very good remark. The way of getting on a toga is always puzzling to me, though I know there are illustrations showing the process of how to dress up. And on the mini figures I sometimes fail to identify which is exactly the edge that should have had a coloured strip... But the keywords you have reminded are very helpful indeed.

Most of the figures are Hat's. The king Antiochus IV is converted from a Macedonian general with a head swap, his ADC converted from the trumpetor. The senate is unknown to me, as I purchased it long ago as a secondhand from ebay.

Thanks for the info, Chen. The brand of the senator would be interesting. A figure full of character. Maybe someone here in the community know something about it.
