Spyros Kayales Akrotiri 1897

Posted by Kostis Ornerakis on 27 Sep 2016, 22:58

Being at our warm company here at Bennos for more than a half year, I noticed great interest in ancients civilizations including Greek one.

My main goal was to introduce a part of Greek newer history. I will not tire you with the complete story behind Spyros Kayales, if you are interested you can find a detailed article:

This was a real favourite! And great to meet you in one of the rounds! Guessed it was a conversion, but I am happily surprised when you show which figure you used! And we also get to learn something!

I knew you were painting something in the past weeks... but I thought it was shrinked chicken and farmland walls. :-D

I like to see your personal style of painting and spraying, its clear from the first moment who is the one who made this. Your sculpting is very nice and accurate too. I searched the internet for this subject and I found very different images of what Spyros Kayales may have looked like. You made a nice interpretation of that. Especially the traditional Cretan knive took my attention.

About the historical background: I always though the Western European countries were 'on the side of the Greek peoples against Turkey' like Lord Byron was. The story you present us shows the opposite.

It must be hard for a modern Greek to be confronted time after time with foreigners only interested in the ancient history of Greece... which is such long time ago.
I am one of them. I am the biggist of them at this forum! ;-) Though I have some Greek magazines here at home about the Greek uprising and revolt against Turkey in the 19th century. I can't read the Greek words though..... :(

It is great you show us modern Greek history

Thanks for the grat final. At some time it was pretty close. Grat paintwork and conversion. The overall presentation was fantastic! I didn´t even noticed it was the old esci/italieri barbarian.

Kudos - this is a very creative piece of work. I love it when people convert stuff so that it fits into special scenes.
(it's - no offense to anyone - better then seeing the 145th Tiger tank driving through St.Whatever-gorod)

Thank you my friends for your kind comments. :-D

Mr. Cryns
I painted this before start shrinking project, as it was part of the last painting competition. But you are wright, I am painting my WIP project now.

And yes Europe helped the Greeks to found the Greek State in 1830, but Crete was part of Greece in 1913. Until then Crete remain under Turks and Cretans never stopped to claim their independence.

Though many Europians helped with their way, like Jules Vern (in Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, cpt Nemo helps Cretans with provisions), but for Goverments Cretans were rebels. So they have send an expeditionary force to oversee peace in Chania.
