British Emhar w/ HAT flank companies

Posted by davbenbak on 04 Oct 2016, 17:39

Here's the 50th foot. Mostly Emhar figures but HAT figures on the ends for flank companies as well as most of the command figures. The drummer is Emhar. Though not as detailed as those posted by "Iron Duke", I think the two brands match pretty well for my wargaming purposes.

I think they preferred "The Fighting Half Hundred" but, yes, that's them. Working on units that fought at Vimero first and then will expend to have credible force for the rest of the peninsular campaign.

There is no doubt about the quality of your painting work. Let that be clear to begin with. Also the clear, bright light helps in showing that!

But I think a picture like this does not belong in THE GALLERY.
The Gallery is supposed to be the PRESENTATION FACE of Benno's Forum.
Posting pictures with a messy background displaying your working desk, which is a 'behind the scenes' situation, makes this A WORK IN PROGRESS PICTURE.

So this kind of pictures should be removed to the WORK IN PROGRESS SECTION.
There is no doubt about this and I am sure most members will agree in this.

The Gallery is supposed to be filled with EYE CANDY. That is a VISUAL CONCEPT.
That means not only painting quality, light and focussing must be perfect, but there should be at least be some attention payed to THE BACKGROUND and CROPPING of the pictures.

Well you are not the worst member when it comes to posting WIP pictures in the gallery. The worst one is VELLEK and I will write him such a request too.

Thanks for working on the backgrounds now. Or for switching over to the WIP section. :yeah:

I agree with you, Mr Cryns, but please don´t play too much this role as guardian of the laws/topics. It has a little bit the smell/sound of a german police-officer who don´t allow more liberal interpretations of the topics/rules.

I appreciate these wonderful painted figures regardless of their background.

Mr. Cryns,

Thank you for your comments. It would be naïve for anyone to post to a public forum and not expect for others to comment. It is obvious for everyone to see, based on your own body of work, that you strive to do your very best to achieve perfection and then share the process and results.

I think your concerns are valid as there are differences in the concept of a forum and a gallery. Perhaps the gallery should not be a forum? Perhaps it should be an area where Benno or any of the moderators showcase "eye candy" of their choosing from those pictures submitted on the forum without comment? Perhaps there should be a separate forum titled "Completed Works" to compliment the WIP forum? Perhaps this is a cause that you would support and champion?

I will of course follow the direction and decisions of Benno or any moderator or his choosing should they decide to move any of my posts to what they feel are more appropriate areas of the web site. I will also do my best to follow the rules for posting as outlined at the top of each forum. I took the time to re-read them before responding to your post and found them to be quite helpful.

Dear davbenbak,

How can I thank you for your nice reply to my simple request?
I appreciate your words very very much.
And I am happy to read at least you understood the point I am trying to make.
While others only react to the 'tone' in stead of the concept.

davbenbak wrote:an area where Benno or any of the moderators showcase "eye candy" of their choosing from those pictures submitted on the forum without comment?

Yes that would be great but how to decide what to choose and what not?
I am sure Benno and Remco will not want to do such choosing.
And the moderators like Paul, Peter and Kekso all want to stay out of anything that comes near judgement and playing the policeman. I understand them in that.
But I miss a tough, rigid webmaster in all of this.
We have no.
And there will be no I think.
And most members seem to be very happy there is no.

Don't get upset BB. This is only a discussion :-D

Personally, I like it very much and yes, it belongs here.
I'm against dividing member's work into "good" and "eye candy" and I'm happy for every work people post in gallery or wip subforum. If some of you feels like rating other people's work then vote in painting competitions and duels.

Thank you Kekso. This is exactly the point I was trying to make for Mr. Cryns. I hoped that if I put it in polite terms and avoided making it personal he would understand the difference between having a forum and having a gallery. I was difficult at first not to take his comments as a personal attack but I took a few deep breaths and focused on his intent. I was able to understand his desire that the "gallery to suppossed be filled with eye candy" and his call for self-censorship. The problem occurs when one tries to impose one's own personal taste on the behavior of others. When he posted this opinion on several threads identifying several examples it did not go over very well.

Perhaps if he had started an original thread in the "General" forum stating his opinions others could have posted their opinion's free from the anger that results in feeling attacked. I echo your sentiments on EVERY picture posted anywhere on the forum. I had hoped by explaining what would be required to have a gallery that would reflect his conceptual vision would require he would understand. Can you imagine going to an art gallery and expecting to be able to leave comments for future visitors to read on each work, much less for the artist themselves? Or, being able to tell the gallery owner what type of art to display? That's the difference between a gallery and a forum and I am deeply grateful and appreciate the opportunity to post to a forum such as this.

Well said Dalibor and Dave!

Gallery is for finished work, with a messy background or not! So dear members keep posting pictures of your painted figures in every way you like them to show them to us! And if someone doesn't like the way of presentation, don't comment on it!

This is an open forum for members who are old, young, middle aged (like me! :xd: ), poor, rich from over whole the world who has FUN painting figures! That word in BOLD and underlined is the most important word! :-D
