HaT Horse Grenadiers - Nappy Cavalry Project Regt #19

Posted by Marvin on 20 Oct 2016, 21:36

Number 19 - Yes 19!!! - in my Nappy Cavalry Project are HaT's Horse Grenadiers.

Quite a rare set now. These are really nice figures, just a shame there weren't more poses in the set. They are in wintry conditions as a kind of homage to the regiment’s action in the snowy Battle of Eylau in 1807.

More pics and a little history of the regiment on my blog - https://suburbanmilitarism.wordpress.com/2016/10/20/grenadiers-a-cheval-de-la-garde-imperiale-nappy-cavalry-project-set-19/

And, if yer interested, the full list of regiments painted so far - https://suburbanmilitarism.wordpress.com/napoleonic-cavalry-project-2015/

I've always liked this set and now I can see just how good they can be. These look just the way Grenadiers of the Imperial Guard should, magnificent.

The snowy bases look great, particularly when you put them all together, I love the frost on the plants.

As per the norm your figures are superb. I am a big fan of this old set. I think there is a lot of character in these few poses.
Also, I love your blog. Very informative and engaging history!!! Well done!

Sweet!

Lovely painting, as usual, and cracking bases. If you can - sometime - can you do a tutorial to walk us through how you do your bases?

Fanrastic painting bringing these guys to life.

I am about to refurbish my horse Grenadiers and my best efforts will unfortunately be nothing compared to these.

Something to aim for though.

Best wishes,

Chris

A bit dark, but maybe they have the same weather as I have. No sun! :-( Great to see these and together they look massive!

I love your painting (and have enjoyed your Nap cavalry series)

but

It must just be me, but there is something I just don't quite like about the figures. I have them, but they just seem to lack that certain magic (the figures, NOT your paintwork). I don't know if their bearskins are too regular, or their poses awkward, or something. But they just don't get me going in some odd way. Maybe the horses/horse furniture. I just don't know - they seem lifeless compared to the better 1/72 models available.

But I say again, not a criticism of your painting - marvellous job.

Great brushwork on this unit Marvin!

With these figures you can make another unit: The gendarmes! ;-)

Thanks Steve! I'll see if I can put something together. In a word though, I'd say - "Chaotic!". ;-)

Thank you - and you're quite right about them being a bit dark, Gunnar. I've got a new PC and just can't seem to get the brightness right now. :eh: And seriously - nobody tell Mr Cryns!!! ;-)

@Marc - I know what you mean! I think similar feelings put me off having a go at HaT figs until about #17 in my series. I think they paint up far nicer than they look like they might when on the sprue, but ultimately maybe the lack a little character and life, their poses being somehow a little bit stiff.

Peter - damn it - now I've got to try and source another box!!!

I agree with Marc about figures. IMHO, Horses are weak spot of this set.
Marvin, you did excellent job as usual. I'm happy that DR varnish was just old and new pot worked fine.
Snow bases are awesome and very inspirational.

Thanks, Iron Duke. I'm thinking of moving the cabinets to a better position on my wall so I may do that first before attempting any pics.

And good news! - there appear to be a couple of sets now available strangely in "a generic box" on eBay UK! :-D

Lovely work, there! Your paintwork really makes them pop!

A great regiment of hard men. One of my favourite quotes of the Napoleonic Wars comes from their commander Louis Lepic at the Battle of Eylau. When he noticed some of his men ducking under intense Russian fire, he bellowed at them "Heads up gentlemen, these are bullets, not turds !" (Haut la tête messieurs, la mitraille ce n'est pas de la merde!) :xd:

Painting with Vallejo acrylics Model Colour, I used "Dark Prussian Blue" for the coats, a mixture of "off-white" & "sky grey" for the white bits, "Flat Red" for the facings and I used Vallejo's "Buff" colour for the breeches. For the yellow on the horses cloth I used Game Colour "Gold Yellow." All were shaded with a black wash and highlighted with a lightened mix of the basecoat colours.

I love that quote! :xd: I think being big men on big horses and wearing tall bearskins, they would have made quite a target...
