Airfix British Hussars

Posted by FredG on 27 Jan 2017, 20:46

I wanted to try out a different painting technique on a set of horses so I chose this old set for that task.
The flash was terrible so I set to cleaning it off the horses and re-sculpting between the fore and rear legs.
The paint job I was quite pleased with ( grey undercoat, two coats of brown artists acrylic ink and a final coat of sepia wash) so I cleaned off the flash on the 11 riders and painted them as 7th and 18th (sort of).
I also re-sculpted the legs to remove the cavalry boots and have them in campaign trousers.
They turned out quite well and I'm wishing I'd spent a little more time cleaning the flash and mould lines from them. These old Airfix sets are not as primitive as some would have us believe.

Well paint.
I remember, the trumpeter.
If these set include one fallen, wounded horse with a kneeling Hussar beside at a base this set was my first and lonely riders set from Airfix.
You touch my memories that the horse want fit well into the holes to her bases. The result was that the center of gravity was too high and they write all in an angle. After a few minute the half of the attacking Hussars was fallen without any enemy involved. And the riders want not sit good too.

You read what was the first priority at this time. Nowadays the mold of these figures is more important.
And you show us the quality with your nice brushwork. :-D

They certainly look better than I imagined they could do. There are a number of great nappy hussar sets out there, but for such an old set, these still look alright. I think the riders seem somewhat oversized for their mounts. Your neat paint job has flattered them, nice work!

I know many of you are nostalgic about Airfix and I can respect that. Most probably I would never buy that set. But you did excellent paint job on them Fred.

Thanks for posting. I get nostalgic every time I see the old Airfix figures. They came out when I was a teenager and saw action across many living room floors and back yards. I still have a few brave veterans of those campaigns left, some still painted in their Testors Enamel uniforms. Perhaps next time I am on vacation I will gather them all together for a pensioner's reunion photo shoot.

Cause these are figures from when we were young we don't have to buy them. We have them in our collection. ;-)

:-D Thank you for the comments gentlemen.

Back in the day (1971) I didn't paint this set, I painted the French. I'm thinking about painting one of my sets of Airfix Cuirassiers now just to compare :-D

I think you should buy a set just to see how much fun we had removing flash etc. :P

@Fred, I have one set of French Imperial Guard. I got them on ebay for about 2-2,5€. It was bid for fun and no one thought they worth more.

Regarding fun with flesh, we can have that with HaT figures as well :-)
