Esci SdKfz11 and Flak 38 Vierling

Posted by huib on 18 Mar 2017, 11:10

This is the old but very good Esci 1/72 SdKfz 11 halftrack. It has nice detail and builds into a nice model without big adaptations. The Esci Flak 38 Vierling is another story. A very bad and inaccurate kit. In the end I used only a few parts of the kit. 90% of it is scratchbuilt. But that only doubles the modelling fun!

I saw your Flackvierling and thought: "Do not look like ESCI.
Neither MACO. Nor Military Wheels".

Then I check your build Thread.
I like very much what you do and use to improve massive these aged ESCI things.

Very nice and well done huib.
:yeah:

huib:

I went back and read your build thread with care. For anyone who wants to create super-accurate vehicle and gun models, it is very much worth spending some time with. I was especially impressed with how you would keep trying different techniques until you hit on one that worked, for example the flash suppressors.

A question: how did you get the scratch-built guard to be curved from top to bottom? I realize the shape of the guard as cut out is curved, is it an optical illusion?

Very good information and thanks for showing us the detailed "how-to" guide. I also love that your finished gun rotates, elevates, etc.

Well we certainly had quite a 4th of July eye opener here upon this Forum, with the let down of Photobucket, along with other revealed labeled things, and so I thank you for posting.
The Esci Kit is a classic model or toy to some. The Flak Gun, looks real cool.
Nice to see the S Matt tin of paint too. :-D BB

Excellent conversion of the Flak barrels-those originals were way too thick in my opinion

I think you mean the mudgaurds of the gun trailer? I rounded all the edges with a sanding stick and created some shadow inside with a dark wash. This way I hope to get some optical illusion suggesting that the mudguards are really curved.
