Nappy Cavalry Project - Russian Hussars

Posted by Marvin on 09 Apr 2017, 21:02

Greetings to all

The latest in my rather long list of Napoleonic cavalry regiments is another Russian regiment; the Soum Hussars. I decided to paint this particular regiment because of the unusual colour scheme of grey with red breeches. These are wonderful figures by Zvezda. The detail is quite subtle in places and so requires some careful painting. There's a whopping 18 figures in a box which is pretty generous. :yeah:

Some pics below for your perusal. More images and some background to the regiment can be found on my blog.

The position of the sword and sword arm in the bottom frame looks very awkward, as if the sword was being held like a dagger.
The painting is excellent.

Thank you, if so I think I've been helped a lot by the high quality of these figures.

Thanks Fred. Yes it does look a bit strange from that photo. I think his arm is twisted down so his hand his turned upside down as if in a parry. You might see what I mean from this photo on the other side.

I know what you mean Marvin but even if you supinate in a parry it just doesn't go over that far. The blade is upside down.

( Oh picky picky)

Blucher1815red,will like these as indeed I do Marvin. They look fantastic in your chosen regimental colours. Splendid Painting by the way.

Zvezda certainly raised the bar where 1/72 scale figures were concerned when they started their larger series of Napoleonic Russian cavalry boxed sets a few years ago___ 2004 - 2010. :-D BB

Great stuff, I also liked your blog post about other manufacturers in nappy 1/72. I feel the same way about hat, hard for me to want to add any of their cavalry to me projects (although the French light infantry and British Peninsula infantry sets are great).

I checked on your blog Marvin and the larger photos show the hand much clearer. The hand is pronate not supinate as I originally thought. The parry is legitimate but over rotated, it's an ouchy moment for the forearm.

I believe the intended parry is 2nd

Beautiful work. I especially like your treatment on the dark horse - so hard to achieve anything that looks as good as that!

Marvin--

You have done a terrific job with these magnificent Russian soldiers and their mounts. Your painting style seems unique but I never tire of admiring your output. For some painters, the horse seems to be a bit of an afterthought but yours hold the pride of place. BB is correct--what a terrible pity that Zvezda no longer produces new 1/72 scale sets, in big boxes or little.

It would be difficult to reproduce that pronate twist. Hey - maybe he's hypermobile?

What can I add ? Riders and horses are absolutely perfect... Oh yes, I particularly admire the way you paint the horses' eyes! I would be very grateful if you agreed to give us... no, to give ME  a small step by step describing the way you paint them - I wish I become a horse painter too
