Many thanks to you all.
I think it's important to emphasise that I'm not trying to present a finished product, the scatter was merely a temporary thing. These are units that will be moved to the actual diorama once I am: a) a millionaire b) own a football pitch sized barn and c) retire at the age of 90 (the earliest I am likely to afford (a) and (b)!).
To answer specific questions:
There are about 600 of them - never again - this took me two months.
Well done for spotting the facing colour - I went for the slightly more yellow look as the buff doesn't show up so well.
The Rye fields are made from, wait for it, teddy bear fur, gained from any good haberdasher and on eBay - one has to cut it down quite a lot as it otherwise dwarfs the figures - elsewhere online, I've seen some WW2 people use it quite effectively.
But otherwise I'm relatively pleased with the results - but I can always do better! Many thanks for all your encouragement.
