Roman Penal Legion

Posted by ToneTW on 08 Jan 2019, 23:32

Penal Legionaries done, using a couple of poses from Newline Designs 20mm Velites and Celtic shields. I will also be using them as proxy Ligurians for Lost Battles Zama scenario. Hoping to work on some elephants next.

Wishing everyone a happy and productive 2019!

Nice romans! May I ask, what defines them as "penal"? They look overall quite standard as republican romans with helmets, pila and scutum...Only some armour is missing, but for sure many "regular" consular units would look quite similar..

Thank you everyone!

Good point! They could be used also as regular legionaries. I say "penal legions" based on a picture in Duncan Head's "Armies of the Macedonian and Punic Wars". The image has an unarmoured Roman with a Gallic helmet, shield and weapons.

Cheers.
