3rd French Hussars

Posted by Bill Slavin on 28 Jun 2019, 15:01

I think it was Marvin who mentioned recently on this forum that Italeri's 3rd Hussars are one of the finest 1/72 cavalry sets out there and I would certainly agree. I also noticed belatedly they were the subject of one of the painting duels - rats!

I painted these up this spring. There is a bit more information here if you are interested:

Hi Bill.

Fantastic painting of these Italieri classics.

They look superb in your Peninsular scenery.

I really admire your buildings. They might not be masterpieces of precision modelling but they exude a real ‘ feel’ of the period and country of origin.

Brilliant.

Best wishes,

Chris

Those look very good, Bill. Have you ever thought about competing in a duel?

I like the idea of it, but have been slack at checking out what is coming up - these Hussars being case in point.

Quite wonderful looking Hussars! And I could believe those horses are alive. Excellent painting and, as usual, fabulous surrounding scenery.

These are really more colourful than I might expect, the unique red braiding and lace really lifts the all grey uniforms. Splendid job on a very fine set of figures.

There are a few web references that show French Hussar officers with red boots, but I confess that I have searched and haven't found any obvious source material. I expect it comes from somewhere, but I may be just perpetuating a fallacy!!

But boy, they look sharp. :-D

Amazing painting work on these fantastic (and old, dating back to 1996) figures by Italeri, Bill. Also great scenery and photos.

Best regards. :-D

Lovely work, Bill! :yeah:

This is one regiment that I've always planned to do, but never actually got around to painting. As always, you've done an excellent job.

As to source material for fancy red boots, I've found (non-)contemporary images of, admittedly, elite company officers in red boots:

A beautiful set made even more so by Bill's terrific brush work. :yeah:

This was the first set I painted in my ongoing Napoleonic cavalry project and it sets the standard. I think I prefer your colours to the ones I chose (1st Hussars). If there is even a suggestion that one officer wore red boots even the once - it demands to be painted in my opinion!

Really nice work on the horses too, Bill! Can I ask what colour and shading do you use for the golden manes?

Thanks, Marvin.
I'm digging deep to remember (my painting is very sporadic, colour-wise!) but I'm pretty sure the blond mane colour was just a dollar store sandstone colour with a very light yellow/brown ink wash.

Attention Bill Slavin:

If Marvin looks at your painted horses and asks a question about your process, that is most likely proof that you are doing something right.

Tell me about it, Mr. Bluefalchion. I spend a good deal of time looking at Marvin’s marvellous horses and thinking, “How did he do that?!”
