42nd (Royal Highland) Regiment of Foot

Posted by Bill Slavin on 27 Jul 2019, 14:47

Another project I completed earlier this summer were these 42nd Highlanders (Black Watch) as the newest addition to my British Peninsular army. I hope to add more Highlander regiments in the future, but I enjoyed painting this first set of Italeri figures. I was a bit daunted by the dreaded kilt but was happy with the result.
There is a bit more information on the conversions and a short history of the Black Watch on my blog.

I bet you've dreamed stripes and squares while painting these figures. :D
It looks great.

I take my hat off to you for getting all those delicate lines so perfectly done. Highlanders - I love how they turn out when painted so beautifully like these but there's something about all that detail that puts me off even trying. But these lovely Italeri figures have turned out so well, I may add it to my list of future challenges. A final seemingly trivial point but I do like the shading on the bonnets - a nice texture to them.

Thanks, all.
Once I was into the plaid, stripes and diamonds it was sort of meditative to paint. I'm eager to do some more but will probably wait until I get the Strelets set so I can be spared all the conversions in the colour party.

Very nice indeed Bill and once again a period setting to show them off.

I nearly went mad painting Highlanders but hopefully you are ok!

Best wishes,

Chris

Mad? I suspect you may have painted one or two more than I have in this merry band. ;-)

The flag is a paper flag. I can’t exactly remember, but I’m pretty sure for the regimental flag I found another blue flag on line, inserted the emblem from another source and then tweaked it all in Photoshop before printing it out.

Fabulous painting on these figures, they look great!

And if that's the officer from the HaT light infantry I think he's never looked better.

I use Napflag.

Do not forget to paint the edges where any paper shows.

I personally sculpt the flags when just glued to give them a draped, natural look.

The ‘ full mast’ normally seen is both unrealistic and in my opinion spoils the look.

Best wishes,

Chris

I would echo all Chris says about the flags - my process entirely. Napflags wasn't coming up online when I did the Highlanders but I just checked and it is back. It's a great resource, although mostly they are Waterloo flags and often need a bit of tweaking. Sometimes I take the emblem from Napflags and Photoshop it onto a flag with a bit more character.
The only other thing I have taken to doing, with the British anyway, is sculpting the gold cord that is tied to the top of the pole. It's a simple sculpt, some two part modelling compound rolled out and twisted and then frayed at the ends. Flagpoles are just a stiff wire with the tip hammered flat and snipped off to give them a point.

Thanks Bill.

I use cotton for the cords, tied around the pole and glued into position.

Gold paint the cords which can be knotted, fluffed as you prefer.

Dear Slavin,
Excellent painting! I bought my first Airfix highlanders in 1969, just after the issue of "Waterloo" of Sergei Bondarchuk, with the great Rod Steiger. Since than a lot of sets on this subject have been produced by the various manufacturers. These ones of Italeri seems to be of very good quality.

Excellent painted figures Bill! Like it how you solved the rpoblem painting the tartan. Simple but good.

Aren't these the figures of the second set of Scots from Italeri? :eh:

Thanks all for the kind comments. Peter, I just checked Plastic Soldier Review and yes, these are a second set from Italeri. The previous set wasn’t nearly as nicely sculpted, in my opinion. But I do have my eyes on the new Strelet sets!
