Back to Ancients... Hoplites and Psiloi

Posted by PhilC on 24 Nov 2019, 20:56

Hi gentlemen. It's been a while since last topic... I am regularly painting these days, but regarding the quality of this forum, I don't post everything, only the figures I'm really happy with.

Today, I'm back to Ancients, and I wanted to share pictures of my latest painted figures.
First, the hoplites: Zvezda figures, mixed with some old (and previously painted) Atlantic ones. Surprisingly, they fit well together:

The same hoplites with a screen of psiloi - Zvezda and Hät figures:

A close-up on the officer - he really looks like a Spartan hoplite after a famous Angus McBride illustration:

And a musician playing the aulos, an ancient double-reeded instrument.

Hope you like them :)

These look really sharp. I'm surprised at how well HaT an Zveza figures go together. Excellent work!

I have painted quite a few of those. Yours look absolutely top-notch!

How did you create that golden bronze look? I must know...

You can never have too many ancients! And these look particularly good - both the paintjob and the photography are really top-notch!

The golden metal is the only material for which I still use an old Revell enamel paint (I don't like white spirit which is a dangerous product, but...), I use acrylic paints for everything else.

So the recipe:
1. a layer of enamel gold (Revell)
2. a layer of sepia wash (GW)
3. a layer of brown wash (GW)
4. some lightening on some parts with enamel gold

Sometimes (rarely), I add a step between 1 and 2:
1a. some lightening with acrylic silver (GW) - it will turn gold after the sepia wash.

Remark: I use a similar method to paint copper - just start with a silver layer, then add a layer of red wash (maybe 2 or 3, depending on the exact color you need).

Oh there are, believe me, particularly when trying to remove the mod lines turned into a nightmare - there are some plastics that I really hate

The figures you post always look great. I do enjoy seeing hoplites, there's something very appealing about them. And these ones are very nice indeed.
