Hougoumont - the battle within a battle

Posted by Captain Sibourne on 04 Mar 2020, 19:37

Dear Photoro Man, many thanks for your kind comments - I have a large box of miscellaneous figures which I pilfer at every opportunity to make my conversions. I also got 'Old John' of Vintage 20mm fame to cast several thousand heads, which allows me to change my WW2 paratrooper or WW1 poilu into the requisite Napoleonic figure.

I've been working on another French battalion, this time Airfix line infantry, mostly from the Waterloo Infantry set but with the Grenadiers converted from the artillery set. It takes quite a few sets to get this many marching figures.

These are really the only figure that I like from this set - the rest look dwarfish. But of course, they come with the cardinal error of holding their musket in the wrong arm, but too bad, they create a fine site when together.

The officers are a mix of Esci, Kennington, NewLine, Hinton Hunt and a few others.

Six companies each of sixty, eight drummers, colour party of three, two pioneers (need more), and 25 officers - 400 total.

I'm really grateful to Chris Dodson for some reinforcements to make this battalion complete.

Hello Captain.

You are most welcome as always.

Is that my Washington’s army officer at the back?

Nice to see the regimental mascot has not been scared off!

I really do not know how you keep it up with your busy work schedule.

Best wishes,

Chris

I have to say that it is so impressive and gratifying to see such a grand mass of infantry as they truly appeared. The true meat (literally) of battles was the foot sloggers, poor bastards. So many men were wounded or died in ranks such as these and panoramas like this makes a fine tribute to those men. it was together they lived and died and this is best way to immortalize them. I can't fathom the amount of labor you have put in to this, It takes me a bloody week to paint a single regiment of 36 men. Your skills and work ethic are incredible and I salute you and your grand and glorious results.

Dear All, thanks for your replies. That is a Washington's Army officer, but one of mine - yours has joined the queue, Chris. Bessiere, thanks for your kind words - I crack through them at a pace, mainly by keeping an acceptable but not exceptional level of detail - many others are much finer painters than I.

I love those photos of veterans, people had more character in those days. The French equivalent are very famous: https://www.vintag.es/2016/12/15-stunni ... os-of.html

Hello Captain Silbourne,
… a question for the Waterloo specialists.
Do you have dimensioned drawings / floor plans of the Hougoumont site?
I am particularly interested in the area around the north gate.
Many thanks in advance for your efforts!
