We read Faust at school, too. Part I - where this scene belongs to - is great.
Faust II, on the other hand is, well ... a typical sequel I would say, No comparison to the original.

The painting, the modelling and composition have all come together to create a diabolically seductive scene. Wonderfully evocative!

Is the base petrified wood? It works perfectly. The tree is fabulous and the figures your usual excellent standard.

I liked Goethe's Faust but I wasn't in school when I read it. I think I had returned to school as an adult student when I read Marlowe's Faustus though.

Dear Graeme, Yes, I found the wood for the base in a beach near my town and... I finished it with a polyurethane varnish.
