French and Indian War

Posted by despertaferro on 16 Apr 2020, 11:47

Hi friends...

The Seven Years War’s campaign fought in the North American colonies is my all-time favourite war scenario. The nature of the fight (to gain control of remote outposts and isolate forts, in the middle of a vast wilderness) and the heterogenic small armies of the fighters (all kind of Rangers, Militia, Indian tribes and Regulars) is a never ending source of joy for a modeller who likes guerrilla warfare and non-standard armies. The variety could be immense.

Even though all this, it has been an extremely neglected period. Just a couple of sets produced so far: Indians and Rangers. Despite the Italeri’s Indians being (to my taste) one of the best sets ever produced in plastic, too few to build anything substantial about.

That is why I felt so excited about Giuseppe’s beautiful masters been casted in metal. My only fear was that many good masters turn into no so good figures when casted. I love metal figures more than any, but too often metal casting produce coarse and poorly detailed figures.
Well, I must say that I’m delighted with Giuseppe’s figures. They are at the very top of my tastes in every sense. I really hope their selling goes well enough for him producing more sets. Certainly, I’m going to buy as many he can produce.

These are two French Compagnies Franches de Marine mixed with their Indian allies ready to raid all along the Ohio Valley...

I hope you enjoy them as much as I did...

All the best!

Joan

Thanks for posting. I have bought Guiseppes figs as well. And so it is nice to see them painted in your special way.

These look brilliant! Once again your painting style really shows off the figures. Do you plan on doing any more FIW sets?

Hey Joan,
absolutely impressive...very nice representation of the figures in their diversity.
I also like the Italerie indians very much and I can only agree with you
that this is one of the best figure sets in plastic.
If I ever make something out of the French and Indian War,
I will definitely buy the great figures from Giuseppe.
At Hagen minatures one can buy also two nice set of figures from this time.
They are modeled by Frank Ziegler.

Brilliant job of painting these figures I must say. Each and every one an individual and for the life of me I can't find any flaws. You will certainly have the best looking FIW table I've ever seen. Bravo!

Really nice painting and lovely figures.

I particularly like the muskets and need to revisit mine.

despertaferro has done it again! Are some of these Italeri and some from Guissepe? Maybe a link would be helpful. Great work.

Hi…

Thank you very much for your kind words.

Mabo, I hope we can see them painted by you. It is always interesting to watch how different techniques and skills work on the same figures.

Rich W, I really hope Giuseppe can provide us the figures to make more units for the period. For now, I’m going to wait for his Rangers and mix them with a few of the one’s already produced by Waterloo 1815. When making my units, I do not mind mixing (in fact I like it!) with some not so accurate or not so good figures in order to increase the variety of poses. But I want to count with a decent number of good figures (or at least interesting figures) before I begin a project. And, regarding this subject, I do not see how this could be possible right know.

Egbert, thank you very much for the links. I’ll try to get them once we got back to our normal life… Bought some from Hagen in the past and I must say that it wasn’t the best metal casting I’ve ever seen… The kind of metal casting I like the most is Under Fire Miniatures or Franznap’s. And now Giuseppe’s.

Bluefalchion, this one is easy… All Indians are plastic made from Italeri and all the French metal by Giuseppe.

Giuseppe… I can’t wait… :-D

Those figures are pretty awesome but they look even better when so well painted and in company with other fabulous looking figures.

Have you considered the Redbox British Infantry (Jacobite range)? I think they work pretty well for FIW. I know the infantry uniforms were gradually amended and made more appropriate for the conditions and style of war, so these figures are slightly over kitted perhaps. But they are nice figures and your style would compliment them well! Also, Redbox Highland Infantry can represent 42nd or 78th who between them were present at Ticonderoga/Quebec/Ohio Valley/Louisbourg etc. Redbox militia/irregular set also have a couple of nice figures that could supplement the Highland set. Accurate/Revell/Imex American Militia (AWI) have some very usable figures for light infantry/independent companies, Compagnies Franches de Marine or Courier De Bois. Strelets Tecumseh set has some nice Native Americans (although not as nice as the fantastic Italeri set). I've not bought the Waterloo Rogers Rangers, PSR gives them negative review, however I look forward to seeing what you will do with them!

I look forward to following this thread as FIW is my absolute favourite period. Keep up the great work.

Hi Rich...

Agree with you...
And I love this Redbox range; To me, the best they produce so far...
Not enough poses but maybe combined with some SYW Austrians can do the job...
Many thanks for the tip, I'll see if I find the way to make a British unit out of them...

Just awesome! I also agree with the usage of the Redbox figures as they perfectly fit uniform-wise.
I have made me some FIW heads by HAGEN MINIATURES to be able to convert others into FIW.

Despertaferro, again another model Army.
And there is a great investigation behind your works.
Only your skill and painting technique can afford those close-ups…

Great job, as always ! Can you provide some link where we can find the Giuseppe 's minis ?
By the way, i'm suprised no one noticed that Italeri seems to have released a SYW set (even PSR !!) : https://www.italeri.com/en/product/2618/61/0
Nobody painted it ?

The link you give us, is for French Indian War or the War of Independence. PSR gives only reviews from single sets and sometimes from playsets (section features if I remind well).
And now you reminded me on that box again, and now I want to buy it again! :-D

The only set of figures from that Italeri Last Outpost that is actually completely accurate for the FIW is the Native Americans. The British cavalry are only AWI and the French Infantry don't resemble French infantry at the time of FIW. The American Infantry uniforms are that of AWI as well, although could pass for FIW. Why they labelled this as FIW rather than AWI I don't really know!
