Fredericksburg

I'm a long-time reader of the forum who only just finally got around to registering. This is my first attempt to post. I recently hosted a Fredericksburg game -- just before our stay-at-home order was issued -- and these are some photos I took in the middle of the game while my friends had a drink. The game represented just the middle portion of the battlefield -- the town and middle pontoon crossing, Marye's Heights and the Confederate positions along and behind Telegraph Road. Union forces eventually did somewhat better than the actual disaster.





























































I fixed your pictures to the right size. When you open a thumbnail, do a right mousclick on the picture and copy the "adress of the picture" put it here in your post, select the code and push the "img" button. Use the preview button to see if it worked well! Greetings Peter

There looks like a lot of hard work on show here.

Unfortunately, the pictures are shown as thumbnails rather than full size.

Is there any chance of seeing them in their true glory?

On my version of the forum, at least, you can get a full-sized picture if you click on the thumbnail. Does that not work for you? If not, I've probably screwed something up.

Hi John.

You are using the excellent Postimage, the same as me.

I have clicked and expanded and the work is in the ‘Grand manner’, right up my street so to speak.

The trouble is having to go back and forth to view the loveliness!

When I post, the image selector gives the link for forums option which will allow the picture to be displayed in all its glory on the forum site.

That's not the point to see pictures elsewhere. We would like to see them here.
I will fix that but later since I'm a bit in the hurry right now.

I kindly ask to link big size pictures in the future, not thumbnails. Thank you.

Sorry to be a pain but having looked at the larger pictures this is even more impressive than initially thought.

The view from the river up to Mayres Heights is lovely.

For a war game, this looks more like a David Greenspan work.

I am constructing my Antietam re fight, the Union disaster before yours, and any more pictures would provide further inspiration.

Thanks for your kind words, Chris. I've been looking forward to your Antietam (as I do all your creations). I did an Antietam game a few years ago, but could only fit the upper part of the battlefield on my table (despite having found a nice model of the Lutheran church in Sharpsburg, that I didn't get to use). Unfortunately, I didn't take any pictures that I can share. I did the sunken roads for Antietam the same way I did Telegraph Road for Fredericksburg. The hard part -- that I know you've been working on -- was the cornfields. I ended up just using squares of painted Astroturf, the same size as my game bases, to compose the fields, so units could "move through" them. It looked OK and worked for the game, but I'm looking forward to the more realistic fields you'll undoubtedly produce.

Thanks, Bessiere. Two brigades did finally make it over the wall on the Union right, but they were pushed back by the Confederate reserves. And the Irish Brigade made it past the rail fence and almost to the wall. Other than that, it was overall just a slightly less bloody affair than the actual battle for the Yanks -- or as they call them down here, the "Northern Invaders".

My cousin lives on just the other side of the hill in Fredericksburg so I've had the pleasure of seeing the battlefield several times. My favorite statue of Sgt. Kirkland going over the wall to succor the wounded graces the park. I'm Virginian born and bred so as long as "those people" were sent back over the wall all is good though we're still mad about them destroying the town itself. I can't help but wonder how much psychological effect the looting of the town had on the soldiers. I feel sure it steeled the resolve of the Southern defenders on the day following.

Another Virginian, eh. I was born in Maryland but have lived most of my life in Charlottesville. There were no battles here -- other than a minor skirmish with some of Custer's troopers -- but it's hard not to get interested in the Civil War when surrounded by so much of its history and so many of its major battlefields.

It's taking me a while to work through all of the pictures but that is a very impressive battlefield and the figures and buildings all look terrific.

My article mentions the crop problem but Tasma 00680 maize came to the rescue.

I have enough corn to feed the armies.

Incidentally, Tasma do lots of vegetables. The pumpkins and beans are excellent, ( and nutritional).
