Late Crusader Army complete

Posted by PhilC on 08 May 2020, 09:11

My Late Crusader Army for DBA and l'Art de la Guerre is now complete, here you are:

Image

A focus on the Templar knights:

And some Hospitalers:

There are of course foot soldiers, such as these:

And a command unit to lead them all:

I used minis from several ranges and manufacturers: Strelets, Italeri, Hät, Orion and Valdemar for the general. As I usually say (to my blog, not to my wife), it is real fun to mix so many different figures.
Their opponents (an Ayyubid army) are being painted, but there's probably a lot to wait before it's over.

I've always loved your work (especially your recent Greek hoplites) and this one is excellent as usual. Your blog inspired me to get back into 1/72 after years.

I like the blue knight most. It is the bigges contrast in color. And look good as all.

Also the background is nice.

I'm really happy that my small production inspired you - by the way, your ancient Celts are excellent!

As you have noticed, I try to paint my figures with as much accuracy as possible. Regarding clothes, I paint them bleached and not white (the detergent containing enzymes didn't exist during middle age  ).

(... c'est plus facile en français ! mais on s'adapte ! )

You have done a great painting work ! :yeah:
You're right about the white.
I suppose that their clothes were done with linen ... (lin) not exactly white.

Yes, according to wikipedia (I'm certainly not an expert), the most common clothes were mostly made of wool (laine), linen (lin) or hemp (chanvre).
And according to Osprey Knight Templar, "under their tunics, the brothers wore a shirt, which was normally of wool, but they were allowed to wear linen in summer because of the heat of the Middle East".
I suppose that their tunics were made of wool.

I use GW Agrax Earthshade, which is a dark brown wash. I you're interested in an explanation on how I paint white clothes, you can find it here:
