Panzerzug BP42 (Armored Train)

Posted by T. Dürrschmidt on 05 Jun 2020, 16:23

Hello,

by today I have finished my "longest" diorama so far (1,3 meters). It shows a German "Einheitspanzerzug" BP 42 pattern, Italy or Balkans 1944.To be more precise, the real train was exact double as long as my model.

The real train had the following components…

1. Abstosswagen
2. Panzerträgerwagen
3. Kanonen- und Flakwagen
4. Kommandowagen
5. Geschützwagen
6. Kohletender
7. Panzerlok (from this one my model starts)
8. Kohletender
9. Geschützwagen
10.Kommandowagen
11.Kanonen- und Flakwagen
12.Abstosswagen (I leveled this one up with an additional 3,7cm Flak).

The train had also two armored track cars, for reccon purposes. Normally These were French Panhards but I used an Italian one….(better model by Italeri).

The Lok, Geschützwagen and Flakwagen are from Hobby Boss (very good quality). They also provide the tracks and the base.

The Abstosswagen is a resin kit by tp model
The Panzerträgerwagen from UM-models
Panzer 38t by Pegasus
Autoblinda AB40 by Italeri
Figures by Preiser, Caesar, Zvezda and Munich Kits.
Flak 37 by Revell
Crates, spare weapons etc. mostly by Black Dog
additional decals for the Locomotive by Peddinghaus decals

It took me about 80-90 hours to build it. One big problem was the connection between the different brand vehicles. Mostly they don´t fit very well. So I had to use a bit "camouflage" to hide it.
There are quite little historic sources about these trains….it was nevertheless interesting to learn something about it.

A real benefit were the Preiser figs from different sets. These are hard plastic, quite fiddly to build but they have a good potential for conversions and the relaxed poses, eating lunch are just great.

Best regards from Northern Bavaria
Thomas

Very nice indeed Thomas.

A monster project but completed with your usual skill and eye for composition.

The pictures, as always are lovely.

Best wishes,

Chris

Still on my to do list. Also only the half train, too.
My biggest vitrine do not provide me 1.3 meter.

Yes to build the French support vehicle by RPM is ... different.

The pic with the whole train and especially the shadow is nice.
Started left, big to the far right, small.

Very nice Dio.

Another option would be to build every wagon bith base for itself and put together each piece for a bigger diorama. But I am not a big fan of that, even if it saves storage room.

As you said Wiking, the RPM-model...I saw some pictures of it and I was not very happy with it. To be honest I have never heard of this company. Once I bought some WW2 models from unknown brands and all landed in the trash bin, for they were a pain in the a... to build and they had very poor casting quality.

But I was very pleased with the "Panzerträgerwagen" by UM Models. It was my first model from this company.

That is beautifully executed. The figures are extremely well done. And I love how so many are anxiously looking up in the sky - you can feel the tension.

Thank you lobo! I saw once a train of this kind in 1:35. It was huge! 1/72 is the perfect scale for projects like this.

Mr.Durrschmidt I tip my hat in salute to you for this massive yet fine work. Incredible variety of figure poses and I love that you have so many figures with the train (as it actually would have been). such a beautiful piece of engineering by the Germans, kind of a shame a single P47 could lay one to waste but that's war, eh? Extraordinary work Herr Durrschmidt!

Truly amazing, great work both in the execution of the whole model and also in the research behind it.

The camouflage scheme looks particularly impressive, although quite how you would have 'hidden' a machine as big as this and running on railway tracks is a mystery.
