2020 Advent Calendar

Posted by Bluefalchion on 11 Dec 2020, 18:55

Happy to see such a peaceful scene, especially one that is so well crafted.

I have never been to Africa but you did a good job of making it look hot.

My chocolate was served at room temperature, as I doubt it would have survived in the heat with your drummer.

A new day beginning with: thank you all :)

For the 12th day of the Advent Calendar (halfway already), we discover the new guard of the Garden of the Hesperides:
Image

All right, you might tell me that these orange points don't represent golden apples very well. But the Garden is meant to be located on the slopes of mount Atlas, where the sun sets, so at the west end of the world. Herakles had to cross the Straits of Gibraltar (the famous Pillars of Hercules, a.k.a. Herakles) to find the garden. According to some interpretations of the myths, the golden apples could represent the oranges (that you can find in Morocco), that were unknown to the Greeks at this time.
End of the mythology lesson. Hope you like this Amazon ;-)

The shield of the Amazon is well done! And a question to the 11th: The hut is selfmade? The roof looks very nice.

Half way done, but I am still waiting for the next post!

Good morning and thank you all!

The hut was a resin model that I bought at least ten years ago, I don't remember the name of the manufacturer, sorry.

Today we must leave the Garden of the Hesperides and go back to reality, the tough one. For Day 13 of the Advent Calendar, let's have a look at a Roman legionary on guard duty:
Image

After posting this message on the blog, I realized that it was the first vertical picture of the series. I probably will replace it by the next one on the calendar page - an extra picture for day 13

In this scene, we see our legionary in discussion with the auxiliaries from day 7 -they're colleagues after all, even if enrolled in different units.

Hope you still like this Calendar, see you tomorrow!

Liking it? I love it PhilC
Your calendar is actually the only one for me with a daily surprise. Each one is a treasure.
My wife has a calendar with tea bags, my girl one with perfume samplers, the other chilrdren I don't know - they are downlocked elsewhere, and me I look at yours every day, and pardon me for manifesting that late my enthusiasm.
To correct this I'll break the forum rules and will express here in French
"Tes figurines sont des petits merveilles, des bijoux en couleurs, admirablement mis en scène, rempli de vie. Je suis en adoration devant tes peintures exquises"

Greetings
Michael

I couldn't focus on the oranges in the Garden of Hespedes because I was distracted by a couple of juicy mangoes.

My chocolate that day tasted of hazelnut.

A new day in the 2020 Advent Calendar, starting with a big: thank you !

For Day 14, we reach new shores, as we follow the steps of Norman knights arriving in Sicily across the strait of Messina in 1061.
Image

The Normans were first employed by Lombards or Byzantines as mercenaries, but became soon strong enough the rule their own counties. In the 12th century, they will create a kingdom over South Italy and Sicily.

Strelets figures, once more. Looking at the various pictures so far, I realized that the figures from this manufacturer were overrepresented, compared with my whole collection. Maybe a bit of variety would be welcome in the next days

Your Strelets figures have all looked rather splendid though.

But I do like variety, and it's almost tomorrow here.

Cookies N' Cream and I don't mind all Strelets-R figures for Advent Calendar entries, since you have made them all look so fantastic.

Thank you again for your nice comments !
Let's get a step hotter for the new day of the calendar.

For day 16, we share the experience of some gladiators into the arena:
Image

The guy on the left is a Myrmillo. He's fighting against a Secutor, a sort of gladiator most often paired with a Retiarius (armed with trident and a net). Emperor Commodus (2nd century AD) is jnown to have fought as a Secutor.

These figures comes from an Ultima Ratio set, and were very pleasant to paint.

See you tomorrow ;-)
