First diorama here - Vikings

Posted by Iceman1964 on 26 Dec 2020, 18:18

Hi everybody, it’s the first time I present a diorama in this site, I have admired the masterpieces shown here, hope not to damage its reputation with my work :-D

It’s autumn in the dark age, a Viking raiding party storms a small village somewhere in the north.
The stockade is bypassed, and the chief of the clan is going to kill the monk if a proper ransom is not given.
Against the normal Viking use, he imposed his crew the use on shields of the clan’s colors, the blue and the yellow, to make them clearly distinguishable.
The small bunch of defenders (the head of the village and his servant with swords, plus villagers armed with working tools) is trying to protect the persons escaping with their poor possessions.

I spent around 100 hours to complete this diorama, the base is cork, I like the shapes it takes and how I need to adapt the diorama design to its curves. The terrain is gypsum with sand, while grass and tree are from the material used for crib.
The Vikings are the marvelous Zvezda, the defenders are the venerable Robin Hood from Airfix, civilians are a mix of Zvezda Spartans, Caesar Mycenaeans and Atlantic Egyptians (Airfix and Atlantic directly from my child box-of-games of the ‘70s)
The water well is Italeri, as the shack and the stockade (made from the Napoleonic’s accessories).

Comments are more than welcome, and have an happy and Covid-free new year !
Let's try the link of the pictures....

A great composition with some lovely painting too.

I love the guy kicking his opponent ala Gladiator.

Welcome.

Best wishes,

Chris

From my point of few an huge improvement for the Diorama section for sure here at BFF.

Kork base
Poor Airfix monk.
Well done is the lighter skin of the baby in comparison to the adults.
The weapons and the colored clothes on the Viking side. And the contrast of the poor weapons and color to the villagers is very good.
Vegetation is a bit sparse.

And there is a bung on the wooden barrel !

TOP WORK !
:yeah:

Hope to see more of your work in the future.

Wow, what a complete diorama and photo report too, Iceman1964. Figures have a great paintwork and the general composition is very balanced and colourful. I love the mix of figures from different manufacturers and eras.

Congratulations and welcome to the forum. ;-)
