My friend Mar

Posted by Santi Pérez on 07 Feb 2021, 20:53

Among my painted figures in a variety of scales, I have some of well-known historical or fictional characters.

I have already shown some of them here in the forum (Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, Asterix and Obelix, Gordon and the Mahdi, etc.). Some others still not (former King Juan Carlos and former Queen Sofía, Pope Francis, Napoleon, famous Spanish Officers and civilians of the Peninsular War or the Independence War, as we call it here in Spain, etc.).

Some of them are plain commercial figures, but others have been more or less converted by me.

However, for a long time, I had in mind to get a figure that represented a real character of my ordinary life, not belonging to History or fiction literature.

And here I present the result of this attempt:

Image

And who's she? Well, she's María del Mar (or Mar, as she prefers to be called).

I think I have mentioned more than once that I work as a High School teacher, in the knowledge speciality of Biology and Geology. Mar is a co-worker (she belongs to Physics and Chemistry speciality) and a friend too.

And why I decided to portray her in 20 mm? During the three years we've been working together, she has demostrated me that is a totally trustworthy person who has always supported me.

I wanted to reward her in some way for that trust and support, and I thought: What better than to give her an original and personalized gift that is impossible for her to already have? That was the origin of this project, that I developed during Christmas holidays.

The first quest was to make the figure. Mar is a tall, slender woman, with curly black mane, who always wears pants and high-heeled shoes. As you know, there are few modern civilian female figures in 1/72 scale and none with Mar's characteristics. It was obvious, I had to build her using parts from different existing figures.

These were the figures' parts I used:

And this was the result:

After the paintjob, I got this character, in my personal and unmistakable style (as usual, pictures of the unpainted, primed and painted figure, viewed from front, right, back and left):

To finish the vignette I needed a base and a simple, but appropriate, setting. I chose a stool, a filing cabinet and a laptop as a tribute to the online teaching we are working with in these times of pandemic and confinement. The stool is a commercial piece by Severn Models, while the cabinet and laptop are cut-out items found on the internet, reduced to 1/72 scale, printed and built.

This was the final result:

I conclude this report telling that Mar was very surprised and grateful when I gave her the vignette.

I trust you have enjoyed it too. Thank you very much for watching. ;-)

Santi.

Wow, a superb figure, as always! Both the painting and the conversion / assembly of the figure are great.

Does she know your previous work with miniature figures? - I hope she is able to appreciate the honor that it means to be the template of one of your masterpieces...

Hello Santi
you paint in your very own style a superb patched figure.

The first section that you impress me is the combination of so many soft plastic figures.
Sometimes I am forced to cut and add soft plastic arms, legs etc for a figure.
I can`t remember that I do use so many different soft plastic figures.
In hard plastic this can be happen easily.
Like in my latest Dio: The power of Whermacht. The one who try to stop all stuff at the last lorry for protection of the cat. His arms his hands his cap and his body and legs are from different manufacturers.
But in hard plastic. Fare more easy to handle, transform and very important to adjust.
In soft plastic like you fantastic use, I think I will fail.

It is not only that you see in each figure what you need.
You have to know what you own. You can get the best figure. If you do not remember it is worthless.
So many different figures and timelines. From ancient till today.

The second great section is the exact alignment of all parts at each contact zone.
It look superb. Like out of the mould. All around and all the time.

:yeah:
For your Roman-waterloo-resitance-milita-DNA reality girl.

Quite remarkable, an excellent and very imaginative figure creation! Interesting also to read of how the components for the Mar sculpture came from other figures.

Oh this is lovely! Great backstory and excellent modelling of course, in your distinctive style. I love the laptop in particular, very cute. The conversion is also seamless, I couldn't tell at first it was converted - which makes it a great conversion!

This is a remarkable and generous testament to friendship. You do have to tell her, however, that you gave her the legs of a grenadier!

I agree with others. Who could tell that this simple figure is made out of so many different parts? Respect.

Dear Santi,
it is your very own painting style that turns your characters into something extraordinary.
The clarity and your lines are outstanding.
As usual a successful overall composition of this little Vignette.

You could have a point here. And clever of him, because when he can be couple with her, he gets his figure back! Very smart! :-D ;-)
