Among my painted figures in a variety of scales, I have some of well-known historical or fictional characters.
I have already shown some of them here in the forum (Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, Asterix and Obelix, Gordon and the Mahdi, etc.). Some others still not (former King Juan Carlos and former Queen Sofía, Pope Francis, Napoleon, famous Spanish Officers and civilians of the Peninsular War or the Independence War, as we call it here in Spain, etc.).
Some of them are plain commercial figures, but others have been more or less converted by me.
However, for a long time, I had in mind to get a figure that represented a real character of my ordinary life, not belonging to History or fiction literature.
And here I present the result of this attempt:
And who's she? Well, she's María del Mar (or Mar, as she prefers to be called).
I think I have mentioned more than once that I work as a High School teacher, in the knowledge speciality of Biology and Geology. Mar is a co-worker (she belongs to Physics and Chemistry speciality) and a friend too.
And why I decided to portray her in 20 mm? During the three years we've been working together, she has demostrated me that is a totally trustworthy person who has always supported me.
I wanted to reward her in some way for that trust and support, and I thought: What better than to give her an original and personalized gift that is impossible for her to already have? That was the origin of this project, that I developed during Christmas holidays.
The first quest was to make the figure. Mar is a tall, slender woman, with curly black mane, who always wears pants and high-heeled shoes. As you know, there are few modern civilian female figures in 1/72 scale and none with Mar's characteristics. It was obvious, I had to build her using parts from different existing figures.
These were the figures' parts I used:
And this was the result:
After the paintjob, I got this character, in my personal and unmistakable style (as usual, pictures of the unpainted, primed and painted figure, viewed from front, right, back and left):
To finish the vignette I needed a base and a simple, but appropriate, setting. I chose a stool, a filing cabinet and a laptop as a tribute to the online teaching we are working with in these times of pandemic and confinement. The stool is a commercial piece by Severn Models, while the cabinet and laptop are cut-out items found on the internet, reduced to 1/72 scale, printed and built.
This was the final result:
I conclude this report telling that Mar was very surprised and grateful when I gave her the vignette.
I trust you have enjoyed it too. Thank you very much for watching.
Santi.
