Aurora Bireme custom

Posted by Howlin on 14 Mar 2021, 11:06

Hello, I am a newbie to the forum and modeller, I love historical context but also like to use the imagination for some historical twist.

My first finished bireme model.... in my haste used krylon glossy clear spray.... definitely will go matte next time.

Can I matte over it to dull it out?

Inspired from some online art.

shortened a little to make it 10 rowers like the art... which I can not find the picture anymore

Yes, hastily used glossy clear coat... do you think if I put on a coat of matte gloss would that help?

Dear Howlin, thanks for posting your bireme pictures.

Yes you should, you can always add a layer of matt varnish over an older layer of gloss. The top layer rules
Use enamel matt, it stays much better in place than acrylic or water based varnish.

But do not add the matt varnish on metal parts and water surfaces. Those look better when you keep them glossy.

THanks i will do that. I have not worked with the other varnishes, only krylon sprays... But I do want them to live long lives.... I assume this is best for minis right? thats where I have some trouble with paint rub off.

did you also see my post of biremes and triremes?

If you use spray varnish, make sure that the can is shaked well and it is always a good idea to warm up the spray can in hot water (not boiling hot) before using it. Otherwise the dull coat could have a shiny finish.

thank you for the tip! I generally only paint in spring/ summer but will do that....

I had a problem when painting the base of a sewing machine, at some points it had sprits of switched tones, I wonder if that would have helped... I did shake it a lot.

anyone know how to make realistic looking bronze? It seems the tamiya bronze paint is really dark, mostly just been using tamiya gold. but thats pretty 1 dimensional and leaves out the use of gold.... i am gonna try layering them next.

for this model i used copper/ gold to try to get it looking like bronze.
