Little Person Gladiotor

So I got to know PhilC better during our discussions about his Advent Calendar. We decided to do a duel. I knew he was very good at painting gladiators, especially the metal parts, because there were some posted last December.

And I remember Mr. Andrea preferred the little person gladiators when I did a duel with the female gladiator from the same Pegasus set back in 2017.

I knew that my figure needed to stand out, so I thought to devote careful attention to the shield and give it an elaborate decoration. I was happy with the results.

For the skin, I initially thought to make him brown-skinned like an African or Western Asian person, but I did not like the way it turned out. But it did give me a dark base to put layers of flesh tone over, built up in the areas where the muscle would be defined or the light would hit.

I had some problems with my pictures. I like to get a lot of light on the figure so the detail can be easily viewed, but the outside sun was too bright. And the shadows cast were going to be a distraction.

Eventually I brought him inside and used a lamp to add some light. Here are a few more angles.





After I saw the last pictures, I was very happy with them. I thought I had the figure to defeat PhilC for sure. But then the duel started. I saw his bold colors, excellent photo, and he had created two small wounds on his fighter. How marvelous! Final tally PhilC 16, Bluefalchion 8.

Maybe a rematch some day. Thanks for looking.

Thanks for the nice compliment. The flesh tone on this figure is about 10 layers of very watered down flat flesh vallejo 70.955 built up gradually over a dark brown base.

And I know what I'm talking about. The mummy duel against him is still fresh in my mind!

It was a very nice entry. My old eyes didn't see the wounds on Phil's figure. But I liked your figure more. And I think the icecream you sent was tasty, but my dog was there first

That's funny, because I had the same idea but I had little time to paint, so I preferred to paint a Mediterranean skin on this small guy.

Just like everyone on this forum, I am impressed with this wonderful shield. I am sure that my brushes are too big for this level of detail. My smaller one is a 2/0, what brush did you use ?
And the other thing is that this figure is really small, did you use magnifying glasses to see what you were doing ?

I don't pay much attention to brush size so I had to go and look after this question. The brush I used for the shield details is a 3/0 round from The Fine Touch. I have smaller brushes than that, but I just love how the paint flows from that particular brush when the viscosity of the paint is correct.

As for seeing closely, I do have a magnifying headset but I find it disorienting to coordinate my movements with a magnified object. For me, being nearsighted, the best way is to remove my eyeglasses and hold the figure very close to my naked eye.

After I completed the red layer of the laural wreath decoration, it honestly looked very good and I almost stopped there. But then I said to myself "PhilC is going to present a fantastic entry, I have to go all-out." So I added the yellow layer with the results seen.

So thanks PhilC, and everyone, for inspiring me to attempt to achieve a higher level of work.
