1/52nd (Oxfordshire) Regiment of Light Infantry

I finally got around to photographing the last few months' work this weekend! I've happily been too busy gaming...

In finishing painting the 52nd Light Infantry I have finally completed my goal set over a year ago to put together Crauford’s Light Division. My build of the 1/52nd was based on the Italeri figures I have used elsewhere in my British army. Although actually designed as a Waterloo era set, half the figures, representing the 29th, wear stovepipe shakos. The other half, 1st Guards, required some work on the Belgic shakos to give them the proper shape. Only a few of the figures have wings, so I experimented with sculpting wings on those missing them and was quite happy with the result!

Hi Bill,
great looking, just as the other Spanish campaign figures you painted. Love your sens of detail and fine painting with good colour choices, nice and subtle without overdoing.
Also admire the photography, and obviously the landscaping, but many others and myslef have said that before.
Now, you have finished Crauford's division you can do more French

Thanks, Aaron. At first I was intimidated, but they proved pretty simple - a bit of putty and then some indentations for the negative areas.

How did you build your terrain ?

Thanks, Chariobaude. The grass is just grizzly bear fur spay (made for teddy bear makers!) painted green. My buildings are mostly carved foam core with cardboard roofs. I get into it a bit on my blog in some past posts, if you check out the subject bar at the top of the page…

Is there any ratio between the regiment you are doing and the number of bases / figures used?
Like about four companies per battalion and two battalions for a regiment with every base representing a full company?

Hi Joan,
The figures are one to twenty five with a base at 100 soldiers, more or less representing a company (functionally a bit less, as the British had two flank companies and six centre companies).
So this build is the 1/52nd, not the full regiment but a battalion (most British regiments serving in the Peninsula only had their first battalion represented) that historically weighed in at an operational strength of approximately 600 soldiers, especially as the war wore on.
I often make my battalions with one or two extra bases to be able to adjust it to its historic strength for any particular battle, one being magnetic for my light company so it can be broken into two and two to represent a skirmish screen.

Some of the poses within the box can be twisted to obtain a better looking active figure. Head swops too, taken from the waisted figures like the R S M can easily be placed on the other figures to upgrade them for say other Waterloo regiments. Then there are more memories of mine using the hot pin method upon hundreds of those little fellows.
However those painted and displayed here are very well painted. BB
