Taking the height at Kolotskoi

Posted by renikart on 04 Sep 2021, 13:10

Hi all,

It’s been a while for me to post something, or even visit this site. My apologies. It’s been a hectic few years for a lot of us, including me. Hope everyone is doing well!

I took up painting my 1/72 scale models again, but not as impulsive as I used to. This time, I came with a plan ;). Instead of painting a full box and having no clue what to do with it, I changed to paint and create mini scenes. I used italeri models, but modified all of them and tried to do some nmm.

This one I just finished. Hope you enjoy!

‘Taking the height at Kolotskoi’

This little scene (1/72 scale) is based on an event that happend on the 5th of September 1812 near Borodino. Two squadrons of the 11th hussars were ordered to secure a height near Kolotskoi monastery, which was held by Russian tirailleurs. After taking the height, the squadrons didn’t stop and, driven by their succes, moved forward. This was a mistake, because they met a large Russian army hidden by a ravine. Under terrible artillery fire and an overwhelming cavalry charge of the Russian dragoons the 11th hussars took many casualties. Nevertheless, with help from the brigade of Girardin the enemy was routed.

Thanks guys, much appreciated! NMM is short for Non Metallic Metal. It's to replicate metal without using metallic paint ;).

Agreed -- it's a really nice scene.
NMM = Non Metallic Metal.
It's a painting technique used to depict metal objects by replacing traditional metallic paints with matt colors. Most paint manufacturers have sets in their catalogs that are specifically intended to be used for this purpose.
This is one that's sold by Vallejo:-

EDIT. I wrote and posted this response before noticing the OP had already answered the question...

Beautifully painted composition.

That Russian needs to lie down quickly or he is history.

Best wishes,

Chris

Hello,
Great work in a format that I also like.
I came to the same conclusion as you about painting figures, before painting figures you have to know what you are going to do with them.
For almost 2 years that I took back the past time I painted figurines without knowing what to do with them and now I'm looking for how I could use them (see my French cuirassiers that I took almost a year before putting them on a skit  ).
So now I'm trying to figure out what to do with my miniatures before I paint them ;-)

Thanks for sharing

What a strange strategy! :-D :-D :-D

It is a very good small scene. And good use of the ESCI-figures and Italeri. Good sets and good painting and good basing!
