A few cavalry for the '45 and SYW

Posted by Fire at Will on 02 Mar 2022, 14:30

These are the new releases from Redbox for the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745, but they will work just as well for the Seven Years War. I painted up 6 units from 4 boxes and by using a few Jacobite left overs added a trio of generals. Only Dragoons were present in the '45. The Horse was in Germany. Since I already had some cavalry I painted one as British and the other two as Hanoverians

9th Dragoons, not involved in the '45 but could replace the 11th that fought at Culloden if needed as it also had buff facings

13th or Gardiner's Dragoons, performed appallingly at Prestonpans and not much better at Falkirk.

14th or Hamilton’s Dragoons, didn't perform any better. Neither regiment participated at Culloden, but the 10th Dragoons who were there had yellow facings.

I would love to paint up some of these fine cavalry figures by Strelets but am happy to admire yours. If I have a decade to spare building an army then I might take on the SYW. Your cavaliers are nicely painted and full of animation. Excellent arrangements and basing; something I'm still working on mastering. I thought Bonnie Prince Charlie lost at Culloden but were there other battles in 1745? It's a bit of big hole in history for most Americans.

The three main battles of the 45 were Prestonpans (Government defeat), Falkirk (draw) and Culloden (Jacobite defeat), but there are plenty of skirmishes and what-if's to be played. The Black Powder "Last Argument of Kings" has a useful campaign for the rebellion (*) I've just finished the Helion book on Prestonpans "On Gladsmuir let battle be" and it just me a whole range of possible skirmish scenarios, through to a possible battle early in the rebellion in the highlands. A fascinating period both militarily and politically

*) or failed restoration for those who believe in the divine right of kings.

Great painting on this mass of mid 18th-Century cavalrymen. Well done!

The Redbox '45 cavalry sets go some way towards filling a fairly large 'hole' in respect of figures for this period in 1/72 plastic - be that for the Seven Years War, War of Austrian Succession, or Jacobite rebellion of 1745. They are good sculpts and very versatile, and can be painted up to represent all sorts of British. Hanoverian, French and other cavalry of the period.

Good to see an overlooked conflict and era getting some great figures now. I particularly like your Hanoverian cavalry, they cut quite a dash on the field.
