Dessert fortress

Posted by dykio on 14 Dec 2022, 21:20

Hi guys,

i had a bit of a motivation problem for the painting of figures so i decided to build a fortress for my ffl and arabs. Now this is a combination of wip and gallery so quite a long post, Hope you enjoy it !!

Since we bought some stuff at ikea we had loads and loads of cardboard lying around so i thought why not use that.

So i started of by cutting and gluing the rough shape of the fortress together.

Image

normally i draw something so i know how it has to be build... but in this case i just went along and in the end (after throwing away what i didnt like) i became like this

Image

i have never used only cardboard as a base and wanted to put plaster over it. Since i had no idea how the carboard would react i decided to put some paint over it first. Just cheap wallpaint btw.

Image

Image

doors and small windows i made from cheap toothpicks. These are flat ones and very usefull

Image

i just glue them on a piece of cardboard and then cut them in the right size

Image

And the wooden support beams i made of coffee stirrers also cut to size

Image

and it really started to look like something

Image

the next step was putting plaster on it. also just cheap plaster mixed with only water. I dont have any photos of this proces because it was really really really messy and i also had to do it quite quick before the plaster dried. So a tip from me... just make smaller portions of plaster :-D

But the result wasnt to bad and even more important... it stayed on :yeah:

next i made the main doors. Now here is another tip. Better first make a plan how to fix them instead pf what i did doig it at the end. Ik had to cut pieces of plaster away to fix them and the whole step was quite frustrating.

Image

Image

but in the end i got them fixed.. and after some colour washes etc it looked like this

Image

and so it was finished and the new inhabitants arrived

and they even took their own plant with them

I hope you enjoy this and next time it will be some figures again !!

Laterrrrrr

Great work, has similarities to my first cardboard desert fort (long gone) that I created due to the cost of the Airfix model.

I admire most those projects created from "waste" material. Excellent job creating this outpost.

A very fine example of what can be done with scrap cardboard and other basic modelling materials, plus of course some modelling skill and ingenuity. This is a very convincing desert stronghold, well done!

Great stuff and it's nice that you save us from the messy pics! :-D Remember when Paul (Paul's bods) made a monastery out of the Airfix Sahara fort.

An excellent recycling scheme right up my street as they say.

I use cardboard that is well compressed as opposed to the gappy variety and then coat it with decorators caulk to get the finish.

This is an excellent demonstration of what can be achieved.

Best wishes,

Chris

Basic materials and a good finish to make a diorama or have a good time playing.

I agree with all the previous opinions, dykio. You have achieved a great result with very modest and cheap materials. And the fortress has a very "desert" look! ;-)

Wonderful fort, Dykio,
works fine and looks really good. I am also a strong adherent to "simple means" - that is my whole philosophy of 1/72 scale. Simple and economic and still good effects.
Greetings
Michael
