1/76 Bedford OXA armoured car (Airfix conversion)

Posted by huib on 05 Jun 2019, 18:17

The Bedford OXA armoured car was designed as an emergency anti-tank vehicle to defend the British Isles against a threatening German invasion in 1940. Based on the Bedford OX truck, almost 1000 of them were built. Under armed and under armoured they would have been no match for even the lightest German tanks. They were retired from service in 1942 when sufficient numbers of better quality tanks and armoured vehicles became available.

This model is a conversion based on the 1/76 Bedford OXC tractor, from the Airfix RAF Recovery set.

Great work on this conversion. If the Germans had invaded and captured any of these, I wonder if they would have bothered to repaint them and press them into service. Perhaps they would have just melted them down for scrap instead.

Apparently the Boys Anti-tank gun could penetrate the armor of the Panzer I, II and early IIIs.

But simply penetrating the armor, on its own, did little good. The round had to strike a vital part of the engine. Or kill the driver. But the rounds glanced off the up-armored tanks of the mid-war period on.

Later they converted some of the Boys into sniper rifles. They did have a nice long range.

A unusual vehicle. I did not know of its existence till your building report.
Nice weathering and oil strains where the tank cap is located.

The German high command realize that German cars and tanks get the driver at the wrong side for left hand traffic.
So they stop operation Seelöwe (sea lion).

Fabulous conversion!

You've got this ugly little duckling from the darkest days of the war looking quite magnificent. It may be underarmed and under-armoured, it may look like it's made from old tin trays held together with chewing gum and string, but this desperate stop gap vehicle sent a message, it said "Never give in". I love it.

This certainly wasn't the worst piece of improvised equipment made at this time, at least the armour might protect you from exploding Smith Guns.
