Here is an overview of the previous diorama. Below right, that's where the orchard is coming. It is surrounded by a deep irrigation ditch and a wooden fence (under construction).

Now it's time to build the barricades and the greening. At the same time, Massimo Costa is modeling three dead British officer's horses for me and Jos Geurts is taking care of all the bushes and trees, including the orchard.

Rorke`s Drift 1879 Diorama

I reworked the rock edge again. I worked very small stones and rubble between the rocks. That works a lot better now!

We are currently experimenting with greenery.

First attempts at greening on a test display by Jos Geurts for the Rorke`s Drift Diorama.

1. Original earth, as it is applied on the diorama
2. Brown and beige fibers 1mm and 2mm high
3. Mixture of 4.5 and 6mm high green fibers as something "taller grass"
Color: Lush spring green, Heki steppe grass mixture and early autumn

There are additional fibers 12 mm high as "higher grass". Sometimes even higher fibers in certain places, so that the grass is sometimes over waist-high. In front of the hospital and in the orchard the grass will be thick and high.

Rorke's Drift Diorama Greening Test 2

The next step is the greening test for the Rorke`s Drift Diorama. We then see how it works later in the diorama. The whole thing has to be applied to an area of 2 square meters.

Today, another 6.5mm green fibers were applied in some places on the already 6mm high grass surfaces. This creates grassy areas of 12.5 mm high meadows, i.e. waist-high.

At the moment I had time to work on Rorke's Drift Diorama again.

I started building the barricades. To do this, I have to make around 900 sacks of corn out of light, self-hardening modeling clay. It's going slowly, but then there are also 900 different bags and I can stack them up in such a way that it will look very natural. I hope to finish this weekend. In the picture there are only just under 200 sacks of corn, most of which still have to be painted.

I decided on a brownish jute tone. In total I need three different colors for the bags.

Here also a current photo of the rock edge between the two kraals in the present. Then another picture of the same area in the diorama. That's how I plan the greening between the stones there.
